Noise on headphone port Linux Mint on AN517

I hear loud ringing on an external speaker plugged into the headphone board on my AN617 running Linux Mint 21. Can't remember whether I had the problem in earlier versions, probably because I wasn't using an external speaker through that port. When using HDMI out for audio the problem is gone. I don't have the problem when I boot to Windows so it has something to do with Linux compatibility. The problem is not there when any audio is played. It's only there when no application is trying to play a sound, in idle.

I have the latest BIOS installed. I've checked Mint forums. Does anybody know about this problem and the solution?

Oops. I see that I said AN617 in the body of the text (although the title is right, AN517). Should be AN517.

For others in case they ever run into this problem: I found the solution. I was using the nouveau driver instead of the recommended Nvidea driver. I think I switched to it to be able to drive an extra wide external monitor with a custom resolution. Can't remember if that helped but I no longer use an external monitor on this laptop. I switched back to the recommendation Nvidea driver and the noise has gone away.
