Hello everyone!

I’m currently using an Acer Nitro 5 AN515-54-54WF and haven’t had any issues with it so far. However, I’m looking to upgrade the RAM since I’ve noticed that a lot of it gets occupied when I’m running multiple programs simultaneously. I primarily use my laptop for programming, and when I’m working on larger projects, there are many processes that need to run in the background, which seems to be straining the current RAM. I also use it for gaming when I have some spare time, so an upgrade would benefit that as well.

I verified the following information for my motherboard (CFL Octavia_CFS v1.23):

DIMM Socket Number - 2
Supports Memory Size Per Socket - 4GB/8GB/16GB
Supports Maximum Memory Size - 32GB
Supports DIM Speed - DDR4 2400/2666

The laptop currently has a single 8GB 2666MHz stick installed. Based on what I know, I’ve researched RAM mixing and found that there's a common misconception about it. As long as the CPU supports Flex Mode (which has been available since around 2005), mixing different types of RAM shouldn't be a problem. My CPU (i5-9300H) should support Flex Mode, though I couldn’t find an official document confirming this.

Given this, I’m considering the following options:

  • 2x8GB
  • 1x16GB
  • 1x8GB + 1x16GB

I understand that 2x8GB DDR4 in dual-channel mode generally performs better than a single 16GB DDR4 stick. However, I’m leaning towards purchasing a 16GB stick now, with the plan to upgrade further in the future.

I understand that if I install 24GB (8GB + 16GB), half of the 16GB stick will run in dual-channel mode with the 8GB (thanks to flex mode), while the remaining portion (8GB) will operate in single-channel mode. But I want to know how does this compare to the performance of a 2x8GB dual-channel setup? From what I’ve seen in various YouTube videos, the performance difference seems negligible.

My current plan is to buy a 16GB 2666MHz stick and pair it with the existing 8GB stick. If anyone has experience with similar configurations, I would really appreciate your advice on whether this is a good choice.

I’m looking for detailed answers and would appreciate a thorough response.

Thanks in advance for your help!
