Switch Alpha 12 (SA5-271) microphone with static-like noise
Tinkerer
Hi, my Switch Alpha 12 microphone is making a terrible amount of static noise making it unusable. I've attached a recording of the noise.
This happens with the built-in/ hands free as well as with a plugged-in mic. A similar issue happened before. It got solved when Acer accepted replacing the battery that had swallen so much that the screen started to come off.
Is it possible that the battery is again being a problem? So far the screen seems to be in place but the mic is making the same noise as back then rendering it unusable. Maybe a manufacturing defect? Other than that, the laptop is working fine.

I'm not sure how the swelling battery caused the issue in the past, but you could open it up to inspect the battery to see if the replacement is also swelling… Have you taken it apart before, or was it only the techs at Acer that did it?

thanks. Acer extended the warranty because it was a malfunction of the battery so they were kind enough to replace it. And it was the techs that took care of it.

OK, it's not likely they will do that again, due to the age of the unit. They aren't really hard to take apart, but you do have to be careful at points to keep from damaging a ribbon cable. You disconnect the keyboard and open the kickstand fully. There are two little plastic stickers on the sides that cover up two screws. Remove the stickers and then the screws. Gently pry the cover off the display, working your way around until it's loose. Carefully remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the motherboard, this is where it's easy to tear the cable, so take your time. I can't remember for sure, but I think that's all that's needed to get the cover off, unless there's one more cable to remove… I had to source a replacement for the keyboard cable on mine the first time I took it apart.
