PCIe 4x4 NVMe SSDs compatible with TravelMate TMP249-G3-MG-53NA?
Tinkerer
Is PCIe 4x4 NVMe SSDs compatible with my laptop which is the TMP249-G3-MG even if it only has 2 lanes enabled for PCIe? or should I stick with PCIe 3x4?
PCIe Gen 3 operates at 8 GT/s (gigatransfers per second) which roughly translates to 1 GB/s per PCIe lane. By comparison, PCIe Gen 4 operates at 16 GT/s, or around 2 GB/s (gigabytes per second) per PCIe lane.
Can Gen 4 still support laptops with only 2 lanes enabled for PCIe? Thank you in advance!

Both Gen4 and Gen3 SSDs will run at the same speed up to twice the speed of a Sata-3 SSD with 2x2 lanes and at the same or slightly faster than a Sata-3 SSD with only 2 lanes. If you prefer NVMe I recommend the Gen3 Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB.

The reason the Gen3 970 Evo SSD is a bit more expensive is because of the huge popularity and adaptability, it also has DRAM memory, most SSDs are dramless, ram plays a big role if you frequently read and write to the SSD. 😉

The bottom line is there is no functional advantage to a gen 4 over gen 3 on your system, just as there is no functional advantage to using an x4 over an x2. Any of them will work, but all at gen 3 x2 speeds.

Noted sir. The 970 evo plus is nice but a bit expensive for me, still added it on my list just incase, my priority is samsung and kingston for now. The price of PCIe 3x4 and 4x4 in our local store is almost the same, but still some depends on the brand. I just wonder if I could use the 4x4 if it has a slight advantage over the 3x4 so it would be worthy for the money.
Yes, I prefer the NVMe to maximize my M.2 slot since it's empty, so I can keep the pre-installed HDD for extra storage.
Thank you very much for all the infos and recommendations, really appreciate it! 😊

afaik, the 970 Evo is the only SSD that has gotten more expensive in the past years, all other SSDs dropped a lot in price, the latest Samsung 990Pro is now cheaper than the older 890Pro, makes you wonder why…..
