I just bought a TC-1785 to replace a 5 year old Aspire which served me very well but and I can't remember what I did to do a clean install of Windows

Does the Windows version that comes preinstalled from Acer typically include all the drivers for the specific motherboard? I'd like to use DISM to save them to make my reinstall easier.

Go to settings and recovery or reset OR safe mode and do the same. Usually safe mode is hold the shift button while restarting or power on Booting.

Here is Microsoft instructions if you want to download to an USB, be sure that boot enable is ENABLED in BIOS.

Most Acer's have a default Windows copy on the hard drive which reset or recovery will fetch.

Default Windows won't have all the drivers installed. I am talking about the Windows that is preinstalled not recovery.

No, the Acer installed OS that is on your TC-1785 desktop has the drivers needed for it to boot and operate but doesn't have the latest drivers, see if it has the last bios version 1.01 installed, as it could have the oem bios factory Acer version 1.0 only. These desktops OS consist of windows updates and NVidia drivers and Intel drivers that are constantly updated, so there is no such thing as a Windows version that comes preinstalled from Acer typically include all the drivers for the specific motherboard, as the one initially provided by Acer is not up to date. The best thing is to do a windows 11 clean install and do all the updates yourself with windows update, NVidia drivers and Intel drivers. Good luck.

There is a inbuilt recovery partition present inside your computer. If it is working good you can always use alt + f10 or right alt key on the lower row of keyboard + f10 while turning on the computer. If the recovery partition is gone bad alt + f10 or right alt + f10 will not work properly. Recovery partition acts like a disk. All drivers and applications will be installed when you use alt + f10 while turning on the computer.

You can also purchase recovery media by contacting Acer store.

You can also download windows 10 to usb flash drive.

You can also download windows 11 to usb flash drive and install it

The recovery media from ACER is a waste of money. I never got mine running even with help of support. Wasted money.

Download to USB from Microsoft or install the F10 version. Plug and Plays has always picked up my drivers but I only have USB Hard Drive add ons.

I recommend WIN11 istallation, then do all your latest upgrades.

Beware that sometimes the screen will be black during installation..Don't mess with it. LET IT RUN

Thanks everyone. I forgot to mention that I am also planning on upgrading the m2 drive so the internal recovery isn't what I want or need, it's just a waste of disk space if Windows media creation works.

I think I will backup the built in OS as an image, install it and update the firmware if needed and then write the drivers out with DISM and see how that goes. I can then install cleanly and update the drivers with DISM.

The recovery partitions aren't really a waste of space, they take up very little room on the disk and when you install a vanilla Windows it will use pretty much the same amount (about 1.5GB, or 0.0015 TB). Your system is Intel based, so to do a vanilla install you will need to first download the IRST drivers and extract them to your install flash drive. Those are very likely the only ones you will need to do the install, no need for any done with DISM.

Actually installing IRST is one reason I need to do this cleanly since I want to use AHCI but as soon as it is installed Windows Boot Manager fails on the default install.

Yeah, removing the IRST features often will break the drive… But if you don't want to use them then a vanilla install in AHCI mode will not require those drivers.

All is good now from the install I have my Windows and Linux dual mode working ok. I haven't figured out how to set the boot (Window or Linux) in BIOS, I only get one choice Windows Boot Manager but grub lets me select. On the TC-885 I had the additional choices of booting directly from the Windows or Linux partitions and not Boot Manager.
