I just bought an Acer Swift Edge and noticed that the USB ports show up in the device manager as USB4. I'm curious if they support external GPUs or Thunderbolt 3/4? I read that they can but not always.

    What exactly do you want to do? As eGPUs are very rarely used and all eGPU enclosures manufacturers have their specs. You need to ask these manufactures and their forums if it will work with the Swift Edge specs.

    I'm curious about potential, rather trying to do something specific right now. It would be useful to know if it supports thunderbolt 3 (which most usb4 ports do) as it will help to know what kind of devices and speeds (like eGPUs or fast drives) it will support

    I'm guessing your Swift Edge is one of the SFA16-41 models. It's new enough that we don't have detailed specs yet... I wouldn't go out an buy an eGPU case until we have more details. There are differences between USB4 and TBT4, and until we know just how much is implemented we can't say what might work and what will not.

    And they have the SG uploaded. Here's the relevant info from the detailed specs:

    So, they are hedging their bets on TBT4 support... The only way to tell for sure is to plug one in and see if it works. :(

    Thanks for the info! It's weird that there is so much conflicting info on Acer's own websites. I see the USB-C ports described as 3.2 gen2, 3.2 gen 2x2 & staight USB4 in various places. You'd think with all the confusion around which versions do what that they would at least use the correct one for their own machine, let alone the big black whole of info surrounding USB4. I will assume that there is no support for eGPUs until I hear otherwise. Other USB4 devices don't really exist yet anyway, but I will cross my fingers. Maybe it will be a nice surprise later on :P

    Those are all actually nested specs, 3.2 gen 2 is a subset of USB4. The USB4 spec itself is most of the cause for confusion, since they allow the vendor to implement some or all of the spec and still use the USB4 nomenclature. We know from the system specs that it's USB4 and the the USB 3.2 gen 2 spec is fully supported, but don't know if the TBT4 spec is all there. My guess is that enough of the TBT4 spec is supported to handle an eGPU, since you really only need TBT3 for that, but if it doesn't work it won't be because they told us it did...

    @quadpatch

    I got the final test, did not support egpu, have returned. Unfortunately, in addition to this, I like it very much. The Chinese official website introduces the full function of USB4 40GB. It is possible that the bios does not support egpu.

    I have since gotten my hands on a USB4 and Thunderbolt 3 external SSD and neither of them work at all. I have tried the latest AMD chipset driver, but it does not help. I do find it strange that Acer blatantly lie on their marketing material. Very sad!

  • Is there a tbt device gain option in the bios?

    As I said in your other thread, USB4 40Gbps doesn't necessarily mean TBT support. If their marketing says USB4 you have USB4, If it doesn't work with TBT devices that means that TBT isn't supported, even though you have the speed. That seems to be the case with most of the AMD based USB4 systems that I see, so my guess is AMD isn't doing TBT in the chipset.

    As I said, I tried a USB 4 device and it does not work. Acer's marketing promise that this laptop supports USB 4 is a lie.

    What USB4 device did you try? Does a USB3 device work? If the port works at all it should work with any USB device.

    All USB 3 devices work fine. The USB 4 device is an Orico SSD enclosure.

    Does the Orico SSD enclosure work when connected to a USB 3 port? If so it sounds like the USB4 port itself is bad, since a storage device like that should have no issues, since it's not requiring TBT.

    The USB4 ports on the Swift X 16 does not work as advertised either.

    The Swift X designs are different than the Swift Edge designs. The biggest thing that's the same is they are AMD based if they have USB4 (which is trademarked by AMD and is supposed to compete with Intel's Thunderbolt). They USB4 designs from AMD seem to be less stable than TBT4 designs from Intel, but that's only hearsay, since we really have too small of a sample.
