Hello

I managed to kill my Acer nitro 5 an515-43 plugging what must of been a faulty mains powered usb DVD drive into the laptop. It has melted the USB module and appears to have destroyed two components on the board next to the damaged USB on the motherboard. Can anyone please help me identify what the missing components are and any advice on where I might be able to buy replacements.

Thanks very much for your help and support

Which side USB did the DVD melt? As there are USBs on the AN515-43 laptop on both sides, the USBs on the LEFT SIDE like the USB 3.1 Type-C Port or USB 3.0 Ports are all soldered onto the mainboard of the laptop, the RIGHT SIDE USB 2.0 Port is on a removable IO BOARD (see caption below) that you could disconnect and change if that is the USB that was affected.

The best way to replace a USB port on any laptop is to have an experienced technician do this for you as it’s a very specialized job as you need to solder all the USB ports pins onto the mainboard and if you don’t have the tools you will damage the USB port and its pins and in extreme cases you will also damage the mainboard and you will not be able to change the USB port, so take your laptop to a technician and get then to fix this problem for you. Good luck.

Right side USB 2.0 ports on the IO BOARD that connects to the mainboard of the AN515-43 laptop, the left USB ports on the other side are all part of the AN515-43 mainboard:

    Hello

Thank you for your reply, it is a usb on the main board the one above the 'I' on the image on the message. The usb module is damaged and their are missing components next to the damaged usb module. I'm unsure if there are MOSFET's but I will need to determine what they are in order to repair the board and the usb.

Again thank you for your message and help.

Its not a problem helping you out, but please be aware if a mosat/capacitor around that USB also melted and has dislodged off the mainboard then those circuitries should be lose inside the laptop, so try to recover them and resolder them first.

Be aware that to change a USB port on your laptops mainboard you need specialist tools as the USB port has many very fine pins that need soldering fully onto the mainboard traces, as its impossible to solder these pins with the naked eye as you need a microscope, if you do this job without a microscope, you will cause damage and the USB port will not work, so be aware of all these factors before you try and attempt a USB port change, take your laptop to an experienced technician that will charge you a minimal fee to do this job. Good luck.
