A new Acer Swift GO 14 needs frequent rebooting.. this is very annoying

Hi, I bought a Acer Swift GO 14 3 weeks ago.

Why does the laptop keep freezing, but the dim blue light on the keyboard was on?

I need to reboot it by pressing the start button for a few seconds.

This happens on average five times in a week.

Please help.

TQ

If you mean pressing the start button the Power Button on the keyboard, don't reboot/shut down with the Power Button but only with your mouse clicking on the Start-Power-Restart/Shutdown/Sleep icon on taskbar, or if apps hang use Alt+F4 or the decades old way Ctrl+Alt+Del.

The reason your system freezes is because of all the bloatware, "free" AV programs like McAfee and Norton and trial versions like MS 365, etc. uninstall all those as they are continuously updating and backing up to Cloud and clash with Windows Firewall security. Also disable syncing with Cloud, Disable hibernate and Fast Start up and reset your Power Plan to factory default in "Edit Power Plan" Finally run these two commands to refresh the system image and repair system files that were corrupted when you aborted by using the Power Button to reboot: Go online and open the Command Prompt as administrator, paste this line: Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and press Enter after that paste this line: SFC /scannow and press Enter, you should see: "….did not find any integrity violations" repeat SFC till you see that.

Don't abort with the Power Button but use Alt+F4 or the old Ctrl+Alt+Del key sequence to close a hanging app. The reason you have this issue is because you have pre-installed freeware, trial versions like MS 365, etc. several browsers updating/monitoring at the background that all compete with Edge and Defender, backup to Cloud and clash with Windows Firewall security. Uninstall those programs, you will need special uninstallers for McAfee etc. that you can download from their websites. Disable hibernate and Fast Startup and reset your Power Plan to factory default, finally go online and open as administrator the Command Prompt and paste this: Dism.exe /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and press Enter, then paste this: SFC /scannow and press Enter. You should see "…did not find any integrity violations" repeat SFC till you see that.

The 'bloatware' is unlikely to cause freezing, but there are plenty of other possible reasons. What have you installed in the last three weeks? Does the issue show up in any specific app or is it random? When it freezes does the mouse still move around or is it frozen also?

Thank you so much for the suggestions.

I have tried Alt+F4, and the Ctrl+Alt+Del key sequence still can't reboot.

The freeze happens when the laptop is idle, sometimes when I use Microsoft Word/Excel. When the problem happens, everything freezes, and the keyboard and mouse do not work except the taskbar, which I will use the Start-Power-Restart/Shutdown

If the monitor is blank, I have no choice but to press the start button a few seconds longer. It will not work if I gently press the start button. As I informed you earlier, the dim blue light on the keyboard is still on, and in most cases, the fan is still on. I read somewhere that I need to do this to discharge some electrical residue...

For your information, the licensed Microsoft Office 365 was installed on the laptop when I purchased it. I have not installed any gaming software or special software except Adobe Acrobat, WhatsApp desktop, Grammarly, and Zoom. I also have not installed any free trial version of antivirus software. I have not synced my laptop with my phone or vice versa.

I guess I need to send the laptop to the shop where I purchase to troubleshoot this unfortunate problem with my new Acer GO 14.

    Thx

If you can move the mouse over the taskbar to do a shutdown or restart then we know it's not a hung driver that has grabbed the bus without releasing it afterwards. If it were the mouse wouldn't be able to move at all, even on the taskbar. We also know it's not Windows Explorer hanging, since the taskbar is functioning. Also, the long press of the power button bypasses software and forces a power down, which is why it works with a log press but not a tap. The Office 365 that was installed is actually a trial, giving you access for s specific term, at which point you are required to purchase it on either a monthly or yearly basis. I doubt if that's the issue here.

Try this, start in safe mode with networking and do as much as you can of your normal usage. Try to get the failure to happen. Since in safe mode any third party apps and drivers are not running it's a good way to tell if the OS itself is corrupted. If the error occurs then the next step is likely to reinstall the factory build. If it doesn't occur then we can assume the issue is with third party apps and drivers.
