Linda, could you post your complete model number? Also, what are you doing when it shuts down? Are you playing high-end games, or does it happen during normal web/surfing, etc.? How long has this  been happening?

There are several possible causes, but two of the more common ones are overheating or a bad power cord. Download the free Core Temp program and see what temperature you're running at.

If you can post this information, we can probably help you out.

Hi Vince, thanks for getting back to me the Model no is BL50 there is a sticker on the keyboard area that says Aspire 5611 AWLMi but there is one on the screen area that says Aspire 5610 I dont play games on it. It happened about 2 years ago several times for a couple of days then it was ok for 12 months happened again then nothing for last 12 months until last week then shut down several times for about 3 days now ok again.

It doesnt have to be switched on for a long period everytime sometimes only for 30 mins I am always connected to internet so most times its when I am browsing. Hope this is enough info and appreciate your help.

Linda, I can think of three possible explanations:

    1) The most likely is that you have dust clogging your exit vent, and your laptop then overheats. Your fan will suddenly blow the dust clear. It is easy to download the free Core Temp program, which I leave running all the time, and this will let you know if you have a heat problem. A can of compressed air costs about $10, but with  your laptop off, try blowing a shot into the exit vent.

    2) It could be a Windows update problem, or a problem with some other program that has automatic updates.

    3) Your power cord might be wearing out in certain places, and you have solved the problem by changing the position of your power cord.
