I would like to upgrade the storage (and maybe memory?) of my acer nitro N50-650 but I'm just a girl

This is my first time owning a gaming pc and I would like to upgrade the SSD card and if necessary RAM but I do not know a lot about computers. I would like to have atleast 1T (?) if it's possible. I would like some suggestions on what is worth purchasing and what I should stay away from. If you have any follow up questions I'll be sure to answer! <3

Ps. I'm doing this to play Sims :)

Hello, congratulations on owning your first gaming PC! There is a lot of information to consider when making any purchasing decision, and purchasing computer components is no different.

How much RAM does your computer have right now? Although you might hear or see many recommendations to upgrade computer RAM, most computers come with enough RAM by default in this modern age. 8 GB or 16 GB is plenty for gaming, and it is unlikely you will notice a performance difference in gaming when going beyond these capacities.

I am going to post the rest in parts as it is too long for one post.

Upgrading your storage depends on what your computer supports. Please provide your computers name and model number and any information you have on it. For now I will assume it is modern enough to support a type of SSD known as an NVMe drive. (80mm version pictured in the link at the bottom)

When considering an SSD, you first need to consider the capacity. You said 1TB (1 TB = 1000 GB). ✅

Next you should consider the interface supported by your computer. Most modern computers support the NVMe interface previously discussed. ✅

Next consider the PCIe standard supported by your computer. I will need to know what laptop you have to know this, but since it is new I will assume PCIe 4.0 ✅

    There is PCIe 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. 5 is very new.

Next is a consideration most people will overlook! it is very important though to know this so you can AVOID CHEAP DRIVES! you do not want to be cheap with your SSD as it contains all your pictures, games, documents, everything! So, consider the layers of NAND. Very confusing yes but I will sum it up in one sentence: Only purchase TLC (Triple layer Cell) NAND SSDs and BELOW. Here are the NAND types in ASCENDING ORDER. Avoid QLC (Quad layer Cell) and above as they have a shorter life span and are more prone to breaking.

    SLC (single layer cells)😃

MLC (multi layer cells (really only 2 layers, think of it as Dual layer cells))😃

    TLC (Triple layer cells)😃

    QLC (Quad layer cells)😡

    PLC (penta layer cells)😡

here is an article which explains more if you are interested:

You can also consider iOPS (input output operations per second). This will make your computer feel more snappy, but most SSDs are at a similar high level here and it can be very hard to notice any difference.

You can also consider sustained Read Write speeds usually in MBs per second, however these are often misleading as almost no normal person (definitely not usual gaming work loads) depend on writing HUGE files to their SSD regularly. HUGE like hundreds of GBs.

If you are overwhelmed now, don't worry. I am providing this information so you know you can trust my evaluation. I will SUMMARIZE in the next comment

The best way to get all the information on ram and SSD drive upgrades for your desktop, especially if you have no knowledge, is to do the Crucial System Scan, as this is a very accurate upgrade scan and Crucial guarantee their scan also. They already have a Nitro N50-650 desktop ram and SSD upgrade scan here "Acer NITRO N50-650 RAM & SSD Upgrades". Be aware, that the Crucial 2TB T500 Gen 4x4 M.2 SSD drive is the quickest drive benchmark tested, so also consider upgrading your M.2 drive to this drive, because if you upgrade your N50-650 desktop to 64GB total 2x 32GB DDR4-3200MHz ram modules and to the Crucial 2TB T500 M.2 SSD drive your desktop speed will improve considerably. Good luck and hope this helps you out.

These are the Acer memory specs for the Nitro N50-650:

Steven is wrong. Upgrading your RAM and SSD will NOT improve your desktop speed significantly. It will probably barely be noticeable. You do not need 64 GB of RAM, please do not waste your money! Only get a new SSD if you need more storage space.
