Hi, my dad recently gave me an Acer Aspire One ZG5 and I am having issues connecting it to the wifi. When I try to connect, it wants me to type in a network key in which I typed in my Wi-Fi password thinking that's what it meant. I received an error message that said "The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits...etc" (I posted a pic of error message). Can anyone help me figure out what to do?

The message you’re seeing indicates that the network password needs to be either 40 bits or 104 bits, depending on your network configuration. You have a few of options for entering this password and a solution to this problem. Hope this helps you out, good luck

    ASCII Characters:

    • For a 40-bit password, you can enter it as 5 ASCII characters.
    • For a 104-bit password, you can enter it as 13 ASCII characters.

    Hexadecimal Characters:

    • For a 40-bit password, you can enter it as 10 hexadecimal characters.
    • For a 104-bit password, you can enter it as 26 hexadecimal characters.
    • Here are some steps to help you resolve this issue:

    Check Your Network Configuration:

    • Ensure that your network settings match the required encryption type (WEP, WPA, or WPA2).
    • Confirm whether your network adapter supports the chosen configuration.

    Verify the Password:

    • Double-check the password you’re entering. Make sure it adheres to the specified length (either 5 or 13 ASCII characters, or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters).

I have no idea what any of that means. If possible I need step by step instructions on what I should do.

In the previous network setup screen try to select Open instead of WPA security that won't ask for a password.

Unfortunately I tried that as well with no luck.

The problem is the wireless original driver (version 7.6.0.224) is too old. Found the version 7.7.0.456, that you may give a try for the Internet. Just in case the steps:

    1. Go to  https://www.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/drivers

    2. Choose Netbook> Select your product> Netbook/Chromebook> AspireOne > Model (yes, choose the model) > Confirm.

    3. Scroll down to bottom of page to Wireless LAN section and download: Wireless LAN Driver Atheros 7.7.0.456

    4. Save As.. to your directory of choice: 7.7.0.456_XPx86_A.zip

    5. After downloading close all programs, right-click and extract to default directory. Make note of where it is.

    6. Shut off wireless. Click on Setup icon in the directory.

    7. Pop up will ask if you want to Update or Uninstall device. Uninstall the device and reboot.

    8. Windows may discover new hardware upon reboot. Cancel.

    9. Turn on wireless.

    10. Go back to directory and click on Setup icon in the directory again.

    11. Install the device. And it should work.
