VX5-591G 78HD Battery issues,couldn't go above 90%. Can this laptop work without the battery?

Hello,

My VX5-591G 78HD laptop stopped working. It already had troubles with the battery, as it was constantly charging, but couldn't go above 90%. Now, it doesn't even switch on anymore. I've tried resetting the battery, to no avail. Judging from how the battery bulged, it is most likely dead, anyway. My question is, can this laptop work without the battery?

    Got a reply from ACER, this type of laptop can work without a battery, despite that "battery boost" or "hybrid power" or whatever it was called. Which means that it's the motherboard that got fried, and repairing a 6 years old laptop isn't really worth it. I guess I need a new one now.

    Some do and some don't. But is not recommended in any case as it risks damaging components without a functioning battery pack.

    Voltage spikes are moderated by a battery pack. If you're a gambler and willing to take the risk, try running it without a battery. Good luck.

    Yeah, it still doesn't work. I guess something else is causing the issue. Also, why is the battery dealing with spikes?! Who designed that?!

    In my over 13 years of IT experience that has never been the case and you can run without a battery. In fact the Government does it all the time cause they are too cheap to replay battery's after they go bad. The only thing that handles voltage spikes is the power supply and surge protectors but I haven't seen normal people use surge protectors since the early 2000's

    There is definitely some other hardware issues. I am sorry for the loss of your system. Find a local Technician and see if they can fix it or at the least recover your data for you .

    Not necessarily. Like noted earlier, some mainboards will not power up without a functional battery pack and charger. Voltage spikes originate from AC mains, not in the laptop. You should try a new battery pack and have your charger checked.

    Okay, I've tested it with and without the battery. It doesn't seem to work. The AC adapter does deliver the correct voltage, it arrives in the mainboard and can be detected all over it. There are no visibly defective parts, either. Still, the LEDs are dark and the system doesn't switch on. Is there a manual power switch somewhere?

    Interestingly, the laptop doesn't seem to charge the battery, since it's output at the battery connector is only 0.2 volts. Perhaps a standby or testing voltage?

  • Hello! Have you checked if the primary voltages of 3v and 5v are present on the motherboard? Without these voltages, the computer will not turn on and the LEDs will not light up. Are these kill buttons being pressed?

    If you want to risk trying to override the mainboard's no-battery detection lockout, google search 'la-e361p schematic'.

    Wait, that button is the battery reset, the killswitch is somewhere else, and I put some tape over it.

    AAnd checking the 3v and 5v isn't that easy, since I don't have a service manual or at least some schematics.

    Though my initial question still stands, does this laptop need a battery in order to work? Especially since it has that atrocious "battery boost" system.

    And my original response still stands. Most earlier Win7 era mainboards run w/o battery pack. Most later Win10/Win11 era mainboards won't. We Acer users don't have access to exactly which will run and which won't without a functional battery pack.

    Yeah, I'm going to need that. From what I understood from the schematic, this layout is really a mess. I guess buying an Acer laptop was a huge mistake. Whoever came up with that "battery boost" system needs to be fired. Out of a cannon, straight into the sun.

    Have you actually read any of my posts, and not just the (ill-fittingly) edited headline? This doesn't help at all.
