How to I get Acer 516 GE Chromebook to see the WiFi 6E from my deco.6GHz router?

The Acer 516 GE Chromebook supports 6E (6 GHz) WiFi, but it doesn't seem to work. It sees the usual 2.4/5.6 signal, but not the new 6 GHZ.

Which exact Chromebook 516 GE model do you have? If your laptop is the Chromebook CBG516-1H (have a look on the back sticker for a model number like this one) as Acer 516 GE means nothing) or have a look in Device Manager, if your Wi-Fi/BT card is the Intel® Wi-Fi 6E AX211 that is an M.2 2230 - 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz card, then either refresh the drivers in Device Manager for this 6E card or completely reinstall the drivers and if this 6E card does not connect to your modem then your modem is NOT a 6E Wi-Fi modem. The AX211 cards are all Intel based, but usually actually produced by a third party using Intel's chips. I have the same Deco mesh system and their documentation says the 6GHz is reserved for the backhaul between the two units. Now that I look for it, however, the Deco app does allow you to reco0nfigure the 6GHz band for both clients and backhaul. You must have that option set…

If you have the same model of Deco that I do, it uses the 6GHz band as a backhaul between the mesh components, so that band isn't available to your laptop. You should be getting a decent connection on the 2.4GHz and 5GHz though.

Wait, wait, I figured it out.

As a guess, in the Chromebook WiFi settings, I clicked on '+ Join Wi-Fi network' and typed in the SSID of the band as 6HGz. It worked. It located the band and linked to it. Not sure why it could not locate it via the natural selection but it found it when I typed in the SSID. :-)

Excellent, thank your for your reply.

The label on the back of the Acer Chromebook is:
    Acer CBG516-1H-53TY Mfg Date: 08/30/2023

The Acer spec sheet shows it as Wi-Fi 6E AX211, which I think is the Intel card (but I don't know how to locate that Wi-Fi card spec in the Chromebook settings). Also, the features label pasted on the keyboard deck shows 'Wi-Fi 6E', along with the other features..

New router is: tp-link deco AXE5400 Pro, 6GHz Wi-Fi band. (only one router is active, not a mesh)

The router setup app indicates that both the 6GHz band and the 2.4/5.6 combo bands are functioning normal and active. I don't have another 6E compatible device to test it. The Acer CBG516-1H works okay with 2.4/5.6 signal but it can't see the 6GHz signal.

I've got a friend that just bought a new Windows laptop. Perhaps I'll ask him to come here to see if his windows machine can see it. Also, I'll play with the router settings a little more to see if there's something I missed. It's set to WPA3 for both bands.

    Regards,

    TL

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm not seeing any performance improvement from the deco.6GHz band, but it looks like I'm hitting the limit of the internet provider. Speed test results are a flat 265Mbps up/down when running WiFi 5.6, WiFi 6E or an ethernet cable in the deco 2.5 slot. That would indicate that it's all the speed I can realize with this internet provider.

If I had dozens of WiFi users on the same router, then the 6GHz band would probably show it's designed performance advantages.

In any event, it doesn't seem to be a deficiency with the Acer Chromebook CGB516-1H or the Intel AX211 card. As for the deco AXE5400 Pro router, I can see how the 6HGz band would improve mesh-ability (if that's a word).
