SF315-52

Model Number: SF315-52

Part Number: NX.GZBAA.001

One of the best laptops I've ever had is finally failing. I installed acer care center 06-21 after the original ssd failed. Now that I'm using a Crucial 1TB ssd, I think it's starting to fail because 8 out of 10 reboots takes the acer green dots 3-8 minutes to spin before windows will load. Also, bluetooth is hit & miss. There have never been BIOS or driver updates since my unboxing. Because of this I would never buy another acer! Today I tried F2 or F12 and even the BIOS was locked! Never before. Is there any semblance of a diagnostic utility that will work for this unit? Thanks

Don't use Acer Care Center, just uninstall ACC and in the registry (Regedit) delete the ACC or Acer Care Center service in: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\ delete the whole key if you see ACC (ACC does not uninstall properly). You are correct Bios version 1.08 is 4-years old (2019/03/29) and has not been upgraded by Acer to Windows11 because of the adapter and MOBO limitations. If you want to upgrade to Windows11 (recommended) I recommend getting a Swift X model on sale $800 on Amazon: Acer Swift X SFX14-41G-R1S6 (Eligible for free upgrade to Windows 11).

I count seven updates to the BIOS between release of that model early in 2018 and the latest in 2019. That's pretty typical as they get bugs reported from the field. Once things are stable there's no need for further BIOS updates. Almost all driver updates are handled through Windows update. Acer Care Center was updated for the model in 2020, as was Acer Quick Access. It sounds like you have gotten great longevity with your system, six years is nothing to sneeze at!

Crucial's ssd scanner found no issues. There are no infections. Not upgrading to win 11. How to get faster boot times without the green dot wheel?

You obviously have something that times out during the boot process, before your desktop is shown. Typically that is caused by CHKDSK running when the system drive is marked as it didn't get a clean shutdown, but it can also be caused by something like a network drive that's supposed to be mounted, but not actually available. There is something like a 90 second timeout for network mounts. You could try to download the setup from Windows Performance Analysis Tools for your Windows version, then use XBootMgr to try and see what's taking the time.

Thanks everyone! So far, no fix. Can't be a network thing for 1 laptop & 1 phone in apt.? @billsey, the link goes to page where the tool no longer exists. complete backup & reinstall from win 11 back to win 10 last month. I think a windows update is to blamer because the 1st updates I got after the transition result in the more often than not note when trying to shutdown "task host is stopping background tasks (\Microsoft\windows\international\synchronize language".

So i try the rando option the 'mvp' volunteer provided an I get NO result changing the REGEDIT. and yes, i had a regbu before starting.

When I saw the last win 10 updates were released, I started trying to flush out the last updates. Everyday I check for updates and get this

but then it disappears and cannot be called back until a reboot. Likewise win update t/s does nothing. Does it ever?

Maybe try win 10 MRT bootable for repair? Are they even still available since the last updates for win 10 just pushed last week?

    Thanks!

Amazing that Acer would not have any updated drivers! We upgraded to 1gbps down & my swift was still showing less than 80mbps down, so I used Driver Booster which I know everyone hates but I got 8 drivers updated and now see 6-800 down on wifi. Thanks IOBIT!
