What antivirus-antispyware software are you using ? Is it up to date ? What does TaskManager say is using all of the CPU ?

There could be several reasons for a slow running computer:

Insufficient memory (RAM).  I have noticed that the recent updates to the Windows operating system are taking up more RAM and seeming to make my computers slower.  You can buy extra RAM quite cheaply these days, but you must make sure that it is the right kind for your computer as there are many different versions for different computers.  Someone with a little skill in electronics can install it for you quickly.

The hard drive is highly fragmented or possibly too full.  Windows 7 defragments automatically in general, but creating some free space by deleting large old files, or using the Disc Cleanup utility can help.

Certain installed programs that run without you having started them, or some that you do, can make a computer slow.  These include the antivirus software, anti-spyware software, the web browser (such as Google Chrome, a very good browser but a resource hog), other, sometimes unneccesary system services and programs.  For someone with a little Windows administration knowledge, using the Task Manager can help identify the problem and computers can be configured to run faster by turning off unneeded services.  I use Avast free antivirus, Spybot free anti-spyware and Microsoft Internet Explorer on my older computers because these programs make the computers less slow although they may be less secure than the alternatives, depending on what you use the computer for.

If none of these things help, a faster hard drive installed in the computer can make things better, and costs less a new computer, but needs quite a lot of work to reinstall the operating system, the programs and utilities and to copy all of the files from the old to the new computer.

Remember also to allow about 5 minutes after logging on to your Windows account before the computer is ready to use at full speed: before that, it may just be very slow as in my case.

Theoretically, installing an older version of the operating system or an older operating system can make a computer faseter, and I have done this, but this may not be possible in your case, and is not a simple solution also requiring quite a lot of work and knowledge.

Alternatively, buy a tablet, which can be much faster, lighter and simpler than a computer, and use the computer just for those things that a tablet cannot do.  There are now some quite good tablets for much less than a new computer.  On the other hand, buying a used/second hand computer can be a tricky business, one I don't particularly recommend.  The cheapest tablets I have seen cost a bit more than, say, 100 (Euros, U.S. $), whereas the cheapest computers cost about 300.

I wish you success solving this problem,

    Clive

Yes, installing more is always a good idea unless you have an Acer Aspire Timeline 5820T.  I checked all the websites where ordering RAM is done, they all recommend the same RAM for the Acer Aspire 5820T.  So there is 3 gigs  the laptop now, I ordered 2  each 4 gig chips, I installed them following all the instructions, the BIOS can see the new 8 gigs of RAM but Win 7 64 bit refuses to boot up.  I contacted the vendor of the RAM, follwed all the insturctions, tried maultiple times, and for sure the BIOS sees the RAM but the Win 7 refuses to boot.  I reinstall the old 3 gigs and Win 7 boots perfectly.  I have read on various tech web sites that others are having he same problem with Acer Aspire laptops.  All my drivers are up to date, my BIOS is current, so I guess its something in the motherboard or what I don't know.
