Spin 3 SP314-54N Why has my trackpad gone stiff?

Hi all,

I have noticed that randomly two days ago, my trackpad on my Spin 3 SP314-54N has gone all still and it is unable to click or even register a click. But banging on the bottom of the laptop cover unsticks it and it starts clicking again and then after about a minute it goes all stiff again. Do you think this a mechanical issue, but my laptop is not under warranty anymore, since its just over 2 years old. I don't think a trackpad should fail after just two years. Also, I can still click, but just by tapping, instead of clicking.

Yes, it is mechanical, although after only 2-years touchpads are not supposed to fail like that, but it does happen: I had the same issue after 3 years with my Aspire a515-54G Elan touchpad. Either learn to live with it and tap instead of click (I did) or replace your touchpad, it is not an expensive item. I recommend bringing/shipping the laptop to Acer Services in your country to have the touchpad replaced.

Any chance there is some contaminant under the trackpad, like a soda spill?

I recommend bringing/shipping the laptop to Acer Services in your country to have the touchpad replaced.

Open the laptop and check if the cables not disconnected from their plugs or their pins are not damaged, as a touchpad either works or it doesn't work and if it hangs and you need to bang it physically to work, that means that it has a lose cable connection to the plug of its cable or the touchpad is on its way out and you will need to replace it. I've included all the parts and part numbers that you might need to fix this problem by replacing appropriate components. Good luck and hope this helps you out.
