Games stuttering on Acer Predator PH517-51 after SSD update

Hello,

I have a relatively old Predator PH517-51 laptop, specs:

Windows 10 64-bit

Processor Intel Core i7-8750H CPU 2.2GHz

16GB working memory

Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070

I have updated my main hard drive to be a Samsung SSD. After the update to the new hard drive when I play games they stutter :( :( :( . I installed a fresh version of windows onto the new hard drive.

The stuttering only happens during gaming, everything else works perfectly. I tried putting the old main SSD hard-drive back into the laptop, but the games still stutter, even though they didn't before. I have tried installing all the drivers for my laptop from the acer pages, turning g-sync on and off, turning vertical sync on and off and none of the above things helped.

Does someone have an idea? Please help

The storage specs of your Predator PH517-51 M.2 SSD are a PCIe3x4 8Gb/s and the 2.5" drive is a SATA III 6Gb/s, make sure that the M.2 slot is not corroded and/or damaged for the new drive, clean the slot first. Update or reinstall the Intel Matrix Storage Manager 16.0.1.1018 or get the latest version from Intel as this driver could be corrupted and/or not compatible with the drive that you are using. Also, do the Intel firmware update version 04C and make sure you have the bios update to this laptops last version 1.16 from the Acer Drivers & Manuals, see if that fixes all the stuttering issues.

Use the same Acer fitted PCIe3x4 M.2 SSD drives as it could be that the M.2 SSD drive that you fitted might not be fully compatible.

Thank you for the reply, I have already installed the intel matrix store manager from the predator site, but it did not help, I will install a newer version and see what happens.

How exactly can I clean a SSD slot?

The ssd that I bought is a Samsung SSD, it is not in the list of the supported SSDs above (where can I find that list?). But the stuttering problem only happens in games, not when I am watching videos or programming in Unity, does this not rule the SSD out as the cause of the problems? Also I added the old SSD C: drive back in and the stuttering was still there :/

You attempted to clone the OS? Also which Samsung SSD You installed?

Download and install the GeForce Experience and then through this software scan your NVidia graphics drivers and download the last GTX1070 graphics drive, which should be the GeForce Game Ready Driver version Version: 537 WHQL. To clean an SSD slot use a toothbrush and use alcohol to clen the pins, but inspect them first and see if any are damaged or broken.

When you install this new NVidia drive use the Custom Install and do a Clen Installation of the driver that deletes all the previous NVidia graphics drivers on your laptop and install this last driver as a fresh install. Then in the NVidia Control Panel go to Program Setting and set all your games to the High-performance NVidia processor, as installing GeForce Experience will also apply the ultimate GTX1070 settings for these games that you play and will stop stuttering of the games.

Also, make sure that you have all the windows updates up to date and install the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant to have all the Intel graphics drivers up to date also. Also install the last BIOS version 1.16 and SSD Firmware version 04C for the M.2 SSDs as I'm sure updating your laptop will stop your laptop from stuttering while gaming, as I don't think that you have your PH517-51 setup properly for gaming. I attempted to clone the ssd but it did not work, so I did a fresh windows install on the new SSD. I am using samsung nvme m.2 ssd

Thnx, I have already installed the geforce experience and updated the drivers, did not help. BIOS is 1.16 as you asked above, but I could not install the nvidia sync thing, as it is bios 1.06 or smth, when I try to install it it says "newer bios version detected"

Try to switched to RAPID Mode on Samsung SSD.SSD.In order to do that there should be samsung ssd software.

Hi so I did placed the original ssd disk back into the laptop and the games are still stuttering. With the original disk I tried re-installing the BIOS versions from the acer website, but when I run the installers it says that the current BIOS version is same or higher. Also I re-installed the Intel Matrix driver, also did not help. Also did a clean install of the nvidia drivers. None of the above helped. Do you maybe have an idea how I can force the BIOS versions to install?

I cleaned the cooling fans of my laptop myself, is it possible that I damaged something?

Also this is maybe a weird question - do you think that updating to windows 11 would help? Maybe force newer versions of drivers to be installed?

Try Win-11 and run the last bios version 1.16 and also do the Firmware update version 04C and see how you go, and let the community know if its fixed your problem.

You can use LatencyMon tool to analyze possible performance problems caused by "storms" of deferred procedure calls (DPCS) and interrupt service routines (ISRs).

So much so that I've noticed this behavior quite often in Windows 11 (ntoskrnl.exe) being caused by:

Audio, network, graphics drivers;
DirectX Graphics Kernel (dxgkrnl.sys);
Windows Defender (msmpeng.exe);
Kernel Mode Driver Framework Runtime (Wdf01000.sys).

It can also be responsible for causing excessive temperature problems by keeping the CPU constantly in use.

I tried to do the update by downloading those files, unziping them and then running them as admin. The installation did not proceed as it says that the current version of the bios is the same or higher. That is why I was asking if I have to install it from the usb to force a bios

Hi everyone so I think I solved the problem - when I cleaned the air fans I did not correctly attach the power source of one :( Now the fan is correctly attached, I increased the CPU power limit to Max and the stuttering is gone :D
