Slow startup windows 11 acer aspire A515-56 laptop

Hi, I'm using acer aspire A515-56 laptop. Few months back i faced a slow startup issue in Windows 10... It would take 4-5 min to get in to the login screen... After login system again takes some time to load the desktop completely. I had tried all the online solution for this.. Nothing worked. So decided to update to Windows 11... But still same problem persist... Now it actually takes 7-8 min.. Like 2 min for acer logo screen then 5 - 6 min showing some black screen ... Can't find what could be the exact problem.. Tried fixing disk defragmentation and virus scan.. Also disabled all startup apps. Still not getting any changes... Please someone step forward and fix this for me...

if you head to task manager, under start up how much stuff is in there? theres around 10 things on mine, and the bios time is around 10 secs

It could be a faulty driver slowing start up , will start by looking at these then see if we can figure out whats causing it

Microsoft recommends Fast Startup for Windows10 and 11: Note it will take 2-3 boots before it activates.

Here are some of the steps to speed up your computer.

Try windows + r - on the run window - type msconfig - click ok

click on services

check - hide all microsoft services

click on disable all

click on startup

disable all the startup items

click on apply - ok - restart the computer. Loading process will be very fast now..

Note: You can always enable the services and startup items later or set it to normal startup from selective startup later on the General tab

Try windows + r - on the run window - type appwiz.cpl - click ok

it will show you the list of programs

remove all the unwanted third party programs.

Please don’t remove any drivers.

If you are not sure , please don’t remove it.

Try windows + r - on the run window type temp - click ok - it will show you the bunch of files - try ctrl + a - select all files - press the shift key and click on delete files

Try windows + r - on the run window type %temp% - click ok - It will show you the bunch of files - try ctrl + a - select all files - press the shift key and click on delete files

If you are not able to remove some files - click on skip and then click click on continue..

Try windows + r - on the run window - type cleanmgr - click ok

click on all the boxes except recycle bin and thumnail

Delete the items which are checked

Try windows x - on the menu - chose command prompt admin or power shell admin

click on yes

on the blue or black window type sfc /scannow

It will be running till 100 %

Try to do a chrome reset

open chrome

click on three dots on top right corner

click on settings

Scroll down - go to advanced

click on restore setting to default

you will see reset settings - cancel

click on reset settings

Open chrome

it will work faster now

If it is still not working then we have to do a refresh and reset

click on start - settings - update and security - recovery - reset this pc - get started

or

on start - type here to search - type reset this pc - click on reset this pc on the top - click on get started

It will show you keep my files and remove everything

chose keep my files

chose the account - type the password - click on local reinstall - click on reset

It will be in progress..

login to computer and start using the computer.

If it is still not working

click on start - settings - update and security - recovery - reset this pc - get started

chose remove everything

click on local reinstall - just remove my files - click on reset

It will be in progress

Note:

If you do refresh ( keep my files ) - all your personal files like pictures, music , documents , videos will still be intact. Only the applications will be lost

If you do reset ( remove everything ) - you are doing a factory default. It will become like a day one computer. It will wipe out everything and take your computer to day one like a new computer.

You can also do the recovery in an alternative way..

There are two alt keys on the keyboard. If you look at the bottom row of keyboard you can see the one on the left side of space bar and the other on the right side of space bar. The alt key on the right side will be looking like alt, alt gr or alt car. Turn off the computer. Hold the alt key on the left and tap f10 continuously. It will go to repair mode. It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot. If it is not going to repair mode, turn off the computer. Turn on the computer. Hold the right alt key ( alt gr or alt car or alt ) and then tap f10 continuously. It will go to chose an option continue and troubleshoot..

It will show you chose an option, continue, troubleshoot

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc

click on keep my files ( only applications will be lost ) chose your account and type your password - click on local reinstall - click on reset

It will be in progress

If the keep my files option is not working

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – just remove my files – click on reset

It will reinstall windows.

If the just remove my files is not working..

Go to troubleshoot - click on reset this pc – click on remove everything – click on local reinstall – Fully clean the drive – click on reset

It will reinstall windows.

Note: You can also go to chose an option , continue , troubleshoot by holding the alt key + tapping f10 or alt gr + tapping f10 on the keyboard while turning on the computer. Once you see the troubleshoot option, you can stop tapping the f10 and stop holding the alt key. Then you can try the keep my files and remove everything ( just remove by files and fully clean the drive ) by following the steps which was mentioned above.

Have you checked the health of the ssd and hdd with the crystaldiskinfo program?

I have the exact same problem. A515-57. This is a brand new laptop and the SSD checks out just fine. It sits on the boot up screen for at least 5 minutes showing the animated circular boot up icon spinning. OS and drivers have all been updated.

Update on my previous post which I can no longer edit. I tried the suggestion to enable Windows 11 fast startup and now it starts almost instantly. From what I have read, fast startup is like hibernate but only for the core kernel session. Not the user session like with hibernate. So the slow boot without it on must be due to the core kernel session taking a long time to initialize for some reason.

I tried disabling all the apps from starting up and it did not resolve the issue. OS and all drivers have been updated. Disabling fast startup is how you reproduce the problem. Not the other way around. I have done full scans for malware and spyware using multiple applications. SSD health is fine. The OP basically said the same thing so none of these suggestions mentioned are the problem. Enabling windows fast startup resolves it. However, that is only addressing the symptom, not the root problem.

This happens BEFORE the OS loads on the startup screen. Enabling fast startup resolves the issue, so it's a an issue related to the loading of the Windows core kernel. My guess would be something to do with the BIOS that might be resolved with a BIOS update.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

I managed to solve the problem by disabling Windows Boot Manager. Now it boots in less than 10 seconds with fast startup disabled. Less than 5 seconds with it enabled. Thanks for all the replies.

Procedure is slightly different to get to startup and recovery on win 11 so just do a search if you can't figure it out.

I think the problem is related to Windows Boot Manager and the fact I have two NVMe SSD drives in my laptop. The laptop BIOS detects my nonbootable drive in slot 1 as the slot 0 drive, so I think it is trying to boot from that and takes awhile to timeout and try the other one.

The BIOS is using Windows Boot Manager to boot so I can't change that order. However, when I boot into Windows Boot Manager by enabling F12 option in BIOS then booting while pressing that, It gives me the option to select Windows Boot Manager on boot and then when I select that it boots in about 10 seconds. So it all seems related.

I could try changing the physical slots the NVMe drives are in but for now I am just going to use fast startup to get around the issue.

Another update. The OS is detecting the 2nd NVMe I added as slot 0. The laptop has a Gen 3 slot and a Gen 4 slot. It came from the factory with a Gen 3 SSD in the Gen 3 slot. I added a Gen 4 SSD in the 2nd slot and that is apparently getting detected as slot 0 once it is populated. Again, a BIOS update should be able to fix this. It doesn't make sense for me to try make the Gen 4 SSD my boot device for various reasons. Should normally not be an issue anyways if I was given the ability to change the slots or boot order in the BIOS, but I can't. Maybe there is a way for me to change the order in Windows Boot Manager or I can just keep using fast startup mode.

Hopefully this will be my last post on this subject. What appears to have ultimately solved my problem was to boot into the BIOS, disable secure boot, reboot into windows, then reboot back into the BIOS and re-enable secure boot.

It should be noted that the way to disable secure boot in the BIOS is kind of wierd. You need to first enable supervisor password in security tab, then it will let you change secure boot settings. After you are finished changing secure boot settings you can disable supervisor password and it will keep the last setting for secure boot.
