I have an acer aspire one notebook that has it's

original install of windows 7 starter.
I would like to replace windows 7 starter with
windows xp professional.

I have 2 usb devices that I am able to select to
boot from in the bios. one is an LG portable multi
drive, the other is a usb flash drive.
I have tried doing the installation from each of
these devices (prepared the usb stick using
winflash).

Both attempts had the same results.
The computer boots to the usb device, shows that
it is installing setup files then goes to
"starting windows" and gives me a blue screen with
stop:0x0000007b (googled this and found it is an
inaccesable boot device)

Bios info:

System BIOS version: v3.09 (DDR2)
VGA BIOS version : Intel v2001
clear of all passwords
boot order is usb
hdd

Can't find any mention of secure boot in the bios.

tried changing disk type from achi to ide = won't boot anything from anywhere

Any help would be appreciated

Thank You

W4nder, you haven't listed the complete model number of your rig, but let me help you. Windows XP is the queen of single-core operating systems. Windows 7 is designed for dual-core operating systems. Your rig has too many new and powerful parts that XP simply cannot control.

I advise you to go back to your factory settings.

Still working on this and getting nowhere.

I noticed that in the bios hdd password was no longer 'clear' - had changed to 'frozen'.

I set supervisor password, rebooted, cleared supervisor password, rebooted then cleared hdd password and attempted the install again.

After that attempt, goint back into bios shows the hdd password as frozen again.

Is it a safe assumption that the hdd password is preventing the install?

I keep finding mentions of disabling secure boot, but that option isn't available in my bios even after I've cleared the hdd password.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I need to contact acer, but the computer is no longer eligible for support when I enter the serial number, and the fee based service goes to a web page that isn't available.

Anybody have a suggestion for contacting acer?

Thank you for your response. This machine has always run slowly, but lately it's gotten really bad. I know there is a recovery particion on the drive so I can reinstall, just thought that windows xp might use less of the memory and help speed things up.

I'll browse around and figure out how to do the reinstallation and hope that fixes it.

    Thank you

Tht's a smart move. When you get back to your original settings, you'll have some factory-installed bloatware on your machine. Download the free Win Patrol program, which will show you your start-up programs. You can Disable (but not Delete) the ones you don't want. Later, if everything is fine, go back and Delete them.

Your computer might have been slowing up because you were installing unwanted spyware without knowing it. Win Patrol will warn you whenever a new program starts up for the first time.
