Trying to boot an Acer Aspire A315-56 SNID XXX from a live ISO file on USB I get "no bootable device."

The BIOS menu does not show any options to select bootable devices.

I have updated the BIOS to the latest V1.27, disabled secure boot, cleared tpm settings, disabled is intel vtd and intel vtx, tried different USB slots, tested the USB stick (it works), but nothing seems to make any difference to show a menu to select boot options and the system does not "see" the stick.

I also enabled the F12 boot options feature to no avail. It only shows Windows boot management but no options.

An interesting aspect is that when I initially tried to boot from the USB, the laptop did find the ISO file and booted to the Linux system but did not "see" the SSD where I would like to install a new OS.

Another baffling thing is that there was NO ram module in the machine, but it started and booted Windows 10, albeit very slowly.

I have inserted an 8 GB RAM module which also does not seem to make much difference.

I am totally at a loss as to what to do.

  • Can you send a picture of the bios info tab, so we can check if the ssd is showing up in the bios? When you press ctrl+s in the main bios tab, an option called sata mode appears?

On the RAM memory question, my suspicion is that some technician did a modification which enables the laptop to boot and run without a RAM module and then stole the module.

I did a few tests with a 8 GB RAM module inserted and then without the RAM and found that the boot time with the RAM inserted is, if anything, longer than without the module.

Boot is very slow, between 5 and 8 minutes which seems to confirm that the machine is limping on internal memory and not utilising any RAM. Any ideas on how this problem can be rectified will be appreciated.

  • This laptop boot M.2 drive is of PCIe3x2 read/write speeds, but this laptop can function with PCIe3x4, this laptop also has provisions for a 1x SATA III 2.5" drive or either mechanical or SSD types. With the memory, its important that you add the proper spec ram (see Acer tested list below) as the memory should not slow your laptop down, as 5-8 min boot is very slow and there is defenatley something wrong with the OS if that is happening, only use DDR4-2666Mhz or DDR4-3200MHz type ram with this laptop, as this is the memory specs of your ram that Acer quotes in the SG and also below is memory modules that Acer has tested the Aspire A315-56 with:

    Test Compatible Components

This laptops compatibility is tested and verified by Acer’s internal testing department. All of its system functions are tested under Windows® 10 environment. The following list for memory components, adapter cards, and peripherals which have passed these tests. Regarding configuration, combination and test procedures, please refer to the Aspire 3 A315-56 Compatibility Test Report released by the Acer Mobile System Testing Department.

  • What happens when you change sata mode to ahci?

Many thanks, this seems to have put my misgivings about the RAM issue to rest. The system shows 12 Gb RAM which will be the 4 onboard and the 8 added. On a re-test the machine booted within 1 minute which makes me wonder if it's not the antivirus. The owner also reported vastly different experiences with boot time.

The 8 Gb RAM module that I added

looks like well within spec, see photo attached.

From what else I have read, seems like I should try to boot from a UEFI device as this is the only format that the laptop recognises. .

Thanks but there is no option to change sata mode to ahci. See photo.
