I just purchased an Acer 714 from Acer online and the speaker volume isn't very loud. I have read the 713 speakers were not very loud either. I've tried various sources, Spotify, Youtube, and Prime Video both app and using the Chrome browser, and the sound volume isn't very loud. Is this normal?

It really depends on your definition of 'loud'… That is very subjective. Verify the volume is set high and that changing the volume works and test with a headset to see if it's different there.

Fair enough, it is subjective. I have checked the volume level on the bottom right and in the app or website i'm on to see that both volume levels are at 100%. To me it doesn't sound that loud at 100% especially if the content doesn't have properly mixed audio like some youtube or instagram content. It would be nice to have a bit more. With decent content, i'm pretty much at 80-100% volume. There isn't any distortion at the max level, and it is odd that it maxes out at that level because from 0-50% there isn't much usable volume there. Way too low, but it does have a smooth ramp up through to 100%. When using bluetooth ear buds or portable speakers, there is plenty of gain there. I feel like the "dts" marketed sound has more to give and it's limited perhaps by the software and not the actual physical speakers and amp of the laptop. Of course I have no way of confirming that. It would be nice if I could compare it to another Spin 714, but they are not readily available on the shelves of Best Buy locally.

I confirm that the sound on this laptop is quiet. On my other laptops and my smartphones the sound is much louder

I'm older than most trees and the sound on my Acer Spin 713, 714, and 513 are not loud enough for my aging ears. So, I downloaded an app that cranks up the sound. The one I'm using is Volume Booster but I assume they're all pretty much the same. I also usually direct the sound through an external speaker that isn't under my Acer Spin. The one I use is a Google Home Mini sitting on a shelf behind my laptop.

I just got the Acer Spin 514 Ryzen 5 cp514 (aka CP514 flip) today, and it's also quiet and mufflled, even with sound set to far right on the bar. I didn't think Eva Cassidy could ever sound bad and muffled singing "Fields of Gold." Even set to full volume, it's totally unacceptable — also with Sony headphones. I'm so disappointed.

It's the bottom speakers. Pick the laptop up and put the bottom near your eyes to hear the difference. Why would anyone think it's a good idea to put speakers where they're going to be muffled? My Pixel phone is significantly better sound, but it has no headphone jack, and earbuds won't work in one of my ears (and they're a PITA).

Is there any way around this? I will try what patrick141 suggested, but reluctantly. I don't want more apps I know nothing about and have no space for external speakers (which would just be spending more, too).

On the recommendation of an engineer who knows more about Chromebooks than I do (I'm new to them), I also bought an Asus Chromebook known as Medocino model to compare. It has speakers on top and is also ao 14" screen. I would never have considered an Asus, but it's $100 less and 3 years longer to AUE, because it's a 2023 model and the Acer is older. Both have great keyboards and 14" screens, which is what I prefer. The lighting on the Asus could be better, but it's bright enough.

For me, the monitor, keyboard, and speakers have to work and not irritate me all day, or I'm out.

I just ordered this small Anker wireless speaker (Bluetooth) at a "limited time deal" price of $23.99. Will try it to decide whether to keep the Acer Spin 514 that has the same sound problem because of bottom speakers. Don't know yet whether it works well enough, but Anker products are usually great, reviews are very good, and it's the best (possible) solution for the best price and size that I found. Might not last as long as the laptop, though, but if it lasts even a year or two and sound is good enough, it would still be a deal.
