When buying a 144hz monitor for my Acer Nitro 5 AN515-57 how can I ensure it supports 144Hz display?

I recently moved out of my house and had to leave my monitor behind. Now, I'm in the market for a new 144Hz monitor, but I'm unsure how to ensure it will support 144Hz when connected to my Acer Nitro 5 laptop.

I had a previous experience where my laptop didn't display 144Hz on my BENQ Zowie XL411p monitor with an HDMI cable, even though the monitor supports it, so at the end it was displaying it at 60Hz and not 144Hz.

Could anyone please provide guidance on what to look for when buying a monitor to guarantee it can display 144Hz from my Acer Nitro 5 laptop? Are there specific cables or settings I should be aware of?

You need a 144Hz refresher rate monitor as to get 144Hz you need to run at 1920x1080p resolution at 144Hz refresher rate, this can be achieved with a HDMI 2/0 or DisplayPort 1.2 cables. The 1920x1080p@144Hz@8bpp requires a bandwidth of at least 8.96 Gbps, so the video output and input need to support it. With a Nitro 5 laptop (depends on the model number, which you haven't given?) but the modern Nitro 5 laptops with HDMI 2.1 can handle a 144Hz at 1920x1080p easily.

These are FAQs that you should consider:

    1. What is the maximum refresh rate that HDMI can support?

HDMI 2.0 and higher versions support up to 240Hz refresh rate at 1080p and up to 60Hz at 4K resolution.

    2. Does HDMI 1.4 support 165Hz refresh rate?

No, HDMI 1.4 does not support a 165Hz refresh rate. The maximum refresh rate supported by HDMI 1.4 is 120Hz at 1080p resolution.

    3. How can I check if my HDMI cable supports 165Hz refresh rate?

To check if your HDMI cable supports a 165Hz refresh rate, please ensure it is at least HDMI 2.0 compliant. You can also check the product specifications or consult the manufacturer’s website.

    4. Can I use HDMI 2.0 or HDMI 2.1 to get a 165Hz refresh rate?

Yes, both HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 support up to 240Hz refresh rate at 1080p resolution, which means they can also support a 165Hz refresh rate. However, you must ensure that your graphics card and monitor are compatible with HDMI 2.0 or 2.1 to get a 165Hz refresh rate.

@StevenGen Hey Steve, sorry I forgot to add it. My Acer Nitro 5 model is a AN515-57. So, have you ever achieved 144hz from the acer nitro 5 to the monitor?

I have a Nitro AN515-56 that has an HDMI 2.1 that both the Nitro AN515-56/57 laptops have, you can connect to a 144Hz external monitor with either the HDMI 2.1 or the TBT4 / USB-C Port that is like a DP 1.2 Port and is a better way to connect to a high resolution/refresher 165Hz or higher monitor.

I have a Dell S2722DGM Curved 165Hz monitor and it works perfectly with my laptop, this monitor has a HDMI 2.0 Port which has a Maximum preset resolution at: 2560 x 1440 at 144 Hz, and its got a DP 1.2 Port that has a preset resolution of: 2560 x 1440 at 165 Hz, which I use with my laptop but I needed to buy this cable "USB C to DisplayPort 1.2 Cable [4K@60Hz,2K@165Hz,2K@144Hz], CableCreation USB Type C to DP Cord [Thunderbolt 3/4 Compatible] for MacBook Pro/Air, iMac, iPad Pro, XPS, Galaxy S22/S20,Aluminum/Grey" as you can use either the HDMI 2.1 or the TBT4 / USB-C port as they will both work on a 144Hz refresher rate external monito.

So, I use the USB-C / Thunderbolt 4 Port, as this Port is the same as a DP1.2 Port and that is what I run for my Nitro AN515-56 and have connected my external Dell monitor, so be aware that your Nitro AN515-57 has the same specs for external monitors.

Acer Nitro 5 AN515-56 and AN515-57 Right Side Ports where you connect the external monitor to:
