New hard drive Aspire 5552 restore disks not working

My hard drive failed on me so I purchased a new one (exact same Toshiba HDD the system came with) as well as the set of recovery disks from Acer that includes one system disk, one language disk, and 3 recovery disks.

I ran the Acer HDD prep tool located here: http://panam.acer.com/acerpanam/manuals/acer/0000/documents/Format%20CD.iso

It says it successfully built the drive and to remove the disk and reboot.  So I remove the disk, reboot with the System disk in the drive.  Select the option to factory restore click start and it asks me to insert Recovery disk 1, so I put it in then it just ejects it back out and continues to ask me to insert disk 1.  Does anyone have a detailed step by step they could share or tell me what I'm doing wrong?  I'm to the point now I'm ready to just install Windows 7 myself without any of the Acer software.

Does anyone know what format the hard drive needs to be?  Specific partitions if any?

You don't need to do any of that. Acer recovery disks handle formatting as well as installation. There are no specific partitions, it's just looking for the primary and no matter the format you choose (even if it's the correct one) the recovery software will format the drive before installing. If you bought a blank disk you would be able to use the recovery disks directly. If it's not working after the second disk (disk one) you were sent a corrupt disk and you should call Acer and request a replacement.
