Replacement power supply for AN517-54?

The power supply for my Nitro AN517-54 laptop has started misbehaving. It doesn't show as plugged in unless I fold the cord under the laptop or hold it in a particular position. Honestly, I'm not sure if the wires in the power supply are breaking or if instead there is a problem with the laptop's receptacle. I fear it might be the receptacle, because the power supply no longer "clicks" when I fully insert it. But I figured for troubleshooting purposes it would be best to try a replacement power supply first, to see if that's the problem. However, I have tried purchasing three different power supplies on Amazon that CLAIM to be compatible with this laptop, and I've had to return them all because they weren't. I have also tried the Acer support chat, but I get an error message every time I try. So now I'm trying here. The model number of my power supply is SPD195923H. Does anybody know where to find a replacement power supply that actually will work with this laptop?

As a related question, has anybody experienced a problem similar to this before? Any thoughts on whether this is a problem with the power supply or with the laptop power receptacle? Of course, if it's simply with the wires in the power supply, it's on the side of the power supply that is hard-wired, which is ALWAYS the side of a power supply whose wires break, so you have to replace the entire power supply instead of just part of the cord. I'm pretty confident they do this on purpose…

I should note that I found what MIGHT be the right power supply on the Acer site, but it costs 2-3x as much as the power supplies on Amazon, and Amazon makes things super easy to return when it turns out not to be the right fit. That's why I'm hesitant to buy the Acer supply, given that I don't know for sure the power supply is the problem. But I will if there are no better alternatives.

  • Hello! Before condemning the power adapter, have you measured the dc output with a multimeter?

The model number SPD195923H is NOT your power supply part number, the power adaptors for your laptop the Nitro 17.3" AN517-54 laptop are the adaptors listed below, and they are either a 130W or a 180W, that number that you gave above is a 180W power adaptor, so its either the DELTA 180W 19.5V - KP.18001.008 or the Chicony Power 180W 19.5V - KP.1800H.002.

What I think is happening with your PSU, is that the DC port of your laptop at the back is damaged or its outside negative port pins are not making 100% contact with the charger plug, check the DC port of your laptop at the back and get a nonconductive tool and pry the negative pins of the port outward so that the DC port negative pins are making contact with the adapter/charger plug, otherwise check the DC port positive and negative pins with a multimeter if the port is working properly as it might need to be changed as its damaged.

Check your AN5176-54 laptops DC-in jack port +&- pins are making contact with the charger plug first, see highlighted parts below.

Thanks for the tips. That was goofy of me not to think of using a multimeter. It was a little challenging, because the probe wouldn't fit inside the small hole on this power supply. But I jury-rigged some thinner wire, and I discovered that the output of the power supply is either 19.5 or 0, depending on how the cord is bent, so it does seem to be a problem with the wires inside the power supply breaking (of course, as I mentioned before, on the side of the power supply where you have to replace the whole power supply, instead of just the cord. So I guess I'll be repairing the power supply.

As for the original question, "Which power supply should I get?" thanks for that table. For future reference, I'd love to know where you tracked that down. It seems the ACER site doesn't work with the Chrome browser when looking up power supplies for a particular laptop. I was able to get it working on the Microsoft Edge browser, and there the ACER site says the replacement part number is AK.180AP010 which, of course, doesn't match any of the ACER part numbers from your table, because why on earth would they want to make any of this easy? (My power supply, the one that came with the laptop, is a "SUPERER" not a DELTA or CHICONY.)

I guess I'll just keep buying and returning power supplies until I find one that actually fits, but at least this gives me some more to try.

Thanks again to those who commented!

It might be a port connector issue on your laptop or charger cable issue.

You adapter might have gone bad. Try to get a alternative charger to narrow down the issue.

Turns out the problem really is in the power receptacle of the laptop. The power supply is just fine. I contacted Acer support, and they say that, because the laptop is out of warranty (I bought it a year and a half ago) it will cost $839 dollars for the repair. The laptop was about $1000 brand new, so I certainly won't be repairing it at that price, and I certainly will not be replacing it with another Acer. Pity, since I liked the computer, but they have lost a customer.

  • Is your computer under warranty? If not under warranty, maybe the problem will be solved by removing the dcin connector and soldering a new connector. But it is necessary to use a soldering iron:
