Acer Spin 713 CP713-2W-54PK. Chromebook won't switch on - battery or charge circuit dead?

    I have just read billsey's post about the BQ7510 and I think he's on the right track. There is an onboard thermistor in this ic which is possibly stopping the CP713 from turning on once it's been tripped by either over heating or current surge.

    I have to say it's very disappointing not to see Acer comment or offer advice. I did email Acer and was advised to send it to a recommended repair centre who would check over the cp713 for £60, plus the cost of replacement parts.

    I'm interested in people's comments positive or negative.

    I've had mine for just over 2 years and it has now stopped charging. Our local Chromebook specialist tried an OEM battery but there was no change in it's symptoms.

    I now have the Chromebook back running on the charger without the battery. I am aware that this is not recommended but it is otherwise useless to me which is a shame because when it was working fully it was a great Chromebook. I mean really great.

    Looking thorough this forum this appears to be a major design flaw.

    Practically, this is now a desktop (which is exactly what I didn't want.. It needs to be portable) as it has to be mains connected and when it dies which it will probably do I will go and buy a non-Acer Chromebook because that would be more cost effective than an out of warranty repair.

    Unless of course there is a simple fix?

    Well, we may differ in the definition of 'major' together with design flaw... :) We've had a few people report they have had this type of issue, but not more than a few. If it were affected all or most of the machines I'd have expected tens or hundreds of reports here. If the issue is what we suspect, a problem with that power control chip used for the charging circuit, it could be that some of a batch of chips were faulty or there is an environmental process that can zap them. That's tough to pin down to a chip that doesn't meet spec or a spec that doesn't match the real world. The fix for those would be a replacement chip, but that means surface mount repair to the motherboard, which isn't cost effective for most users. Especially with the design now a few years old...

    I had a similar problem and did a reset by holding the refresh key down--the key with the arrow going in a circle--and pressed the power button, held until my backlight came on and released it. Chromebook started up and the problem hasn't recurred.

    I have the same issue. Started last night. I am stuck at 1% charge saying calculating. Tried charging from the left USB and then the right USB and then tried a different charger still no different. Will only power up now with the charger connected dies as soon as you unplug.

    Try the power wash still the same.

    Devices 2 years old in September. It's a shame because it is a fantastic Chromebook.

    hi

    I did try that but had no luck, I had it into a shop to have it looked at and picking up tomorrow. They have no idea what's wrong there saying a software error or a motherboard fault and they can't help me with either.

    I am going to re-install using the recovery tool when I get it home

    See What happens then. That's if it will still power up plugged in.

    I have the exact same problem CP713-2W-5874.

    I bought from us and I went back to Europe.

    after some days the completely new Chromebook stop the charging....

    I sent it back to us for a repair because I bought it from Bestbuy (my mistake was that)

    they told me that is no problem and they did not opened at all and the laptop is charging normally.

    now I have the laptop again and after 2 weeks of use the problem is back.

    I tried to contact with Best buy but they stopped the chat without a reason.

    it is a common practice when they don't have to say anything about and they want to hide their mistakes

    after 2-3 years I own it I have used it only some days..

    Never again acer never again bestbuy.

    Hi ,

    Had mine into Acer for repair. Motherboard apparently. £699 new. I paid £599 New as there was a sale on.

    New mother fitted with Vat. Acer wants £634 for a device less than 2 years old.

    Obviously not going to repair it as I can get a new one cheaper. Going on eBay for spares there is probably someone out there with a damaged keyboard or broken screen that could use it.

    The new one won't be Acer

    I am waiting on the return of the old defective 713. 2w

    I have the same problem, but unfortunately only found this discussion after I already bought a new battery. I think this problem is much larger than ACER thinks, since it seems to appear after the warranty period. Most people probably don’t send their machines in or don’t want to pay the high repair costs. It would really be nice to get a better diagnosis from ACER. After many ACER Chromebooks and quite a few problems, we might try out ASUS next. Too bad, ACER has nice equipment, but in the end service and reliability is important.

    Mine went on eBay. For £65 for spares. I took the device to a few local PC repair shops and was shocked by the fact they had no understanding of Chromebooks or didn't want to get involved. I got the device from Currys and they don't offer out-of-warranty repairs on Chromebooks.

    My advice is to go for the best mid-range device if you buy a high-end and it fails it's more to repair than what it cost initially. I replaced it with a grade B Currys Clearance Lenovo Flex 5i and is doing fine. At £230 if it fails it is not as hard to swallow.

    Shame as the 713 was a loverly Chromebook.
