Cooling issues with new SFX14-41G (fan not spinning)

I recently bought an Acer Swift SFX14-41G laptop and while using it I observed strange behavior of the cooling system.

Sometimes while running the game the cooling fan spins and both CPU and GPU are at ~60 C (which for me is expected bahavior).

But sometimes while running the same game:

  • fan does not spin,
  • chassis and keyboard get very hot,
  • CPU temperature reaches 95 C,
  • CPU throttles,
  • sometimes it ends up with a system shutdown (it can be restarted after few minutes so I think it is due to overheating protection).

Forcing active cooling in power plan settings and switching cooling mode with FN+F do not seem to change anything.

Also, I checked how does it look with synthetic load:

  • when running Cinebench R23 (CPU load) fan does not spin and both CPU and GPU temperatures exceed 90 C,
  • when running Furmark (GPU load) fan starts spinning and temperatures are under control (both CPU and GPU at ~65 C).

This implies that fan speed may be controlled by GPU load but for example during Windows installation fan was spinning normally (with various speeds).

Is there any way to do something with that to prevent overheating in some use cases?

Looks like a bad fan or loose contact. I recommend not to open the laptop as that will void the warranty. Instead bring your laptop to Acer Services in your country to check the overheating issue.

But the fan (and generally the cooling system) does work fine once it is triggered. And it does not need to run in 100% to keep low temperatures (I don't know the exact RPMs but the fan was much louder during BIOS upgrade). It rather looks like some software issue (but I installed new Windows and latest drivers and it is the same).

Bring your laptop to Acer Services in your country to check the overheating issue. This is a brand new laptop.

Ok, I was hoping that this can be fixed by some software tweaks but I guess there may be something wrong with the motherboard.

I will just return my laptop to the store… again (I already had to return another laptop of the same model due to faulty battery).

Anyway, thanks for very quick answers!

I already tried different modes in Quick Access. It was only changing fan behavior during GPU-load testing. But thanks for suggestion.

Here is the fan table, as you can see the fan is off in some situations:
