Chromebook CB315 trouble with connection on mobile hotspot device

Last year our two Chrombooks worked great with our Turbo Hotspot device, this year they both have trouble connecting to websites.  The hotspot signal is strong.  I have done hard resets, cleared cache, and tried a brand new hotspot device.  I have done "forget network" and reconnected which works until I close the browser and reopen it.  The hotspot device works great, the signal is strong and it works great with my phone and the Roku so it isn't the hotspot.  Connectivity tests on both chromebooks say "can't connect to the gateway" or "Google websites could not be properly retrieved and loaded".

    Which CB315 model do you have? Your full model number is usually on the same sticker as your serial number, it should look something like CB315-xxx-xxxx. Which ChromeOS version is installed? Does it have any updates available?

    CB315 3H C23C model number. ChromeOS version 113.0.5672.114 (Official Build) (64-bit) It is up to date. The hotspot is one we use for camping so we didn't use it for several months. Since it worked for both chromebooks before, is it possible updates are why it is having trouble retrieving websites now? They work fine with our home router.

    Let's try to look at the network parameters when connected to the hotspot, though ChromeOS doesn't make it easy. Maybe something will jump out as off…

    The results of running ifconfig can be viewed by opening a browser, typing chrome://system in the omnibox, and expanding the ifconfig section. This is a useful way to view the IP address, MAC address, and network statistics. However, it does not display the default gateway or DNS servers. To see them type chrome://network in the omnibox. This will display a list of network events that can be helpful for more complicated network troubleshooting. Typing ctrl+f will bring up the find box in the upper right corner of the window. If you search for networkpropertyupdated and look for the most recent events, then this will show network properties assigned by DHCP. Let us know what they look like. It's possible it's trying to contact the wrong DNS servers, using something from a previous session. Your Default Gateway should be the address of the hotspot AP, the DNS servers should match what you are getting on the phone or the Roku.
