I want to use a WD Black 4TB SSD (PCIe and NMVe) in a Swift 5 SF514-55T-70WF but when I install the dirve in the laptop the laptop refuses to turn on.
Anyone have an idea why this may be and is there a cure for it?

    Hi,

The maximum size recommended by Acer is 1TB but I have seen a retailer advertise 2TB SSDs, you could try removing the SSD, disconnect from Mains and disconnect the battery, wipe the pins with a soft cloth without bending the pins, then reinsert it at an angle and install, reconnect the battery and AC adapter and see whether it helps, also try the SSD in another PC/laptop to check it's not faulty(DOA).

This is what I found out about NVMe SSDs tested in SF514 laptops:

    SF514-52T (2018)
    512 GB, PCIe Gen3 8 Gb/s up to 4 lanes, NVMe

    Swift SF514-54T-76PY (2020)
    2TB M.2 (2280) Single-Sided SSD • PCIe NVMe Gen 4 • 6,600 MB/s Read, 5,000 MB/s Write

    Swift 5 SF514-55T-70WF (2021) Installed SSD
    Size M.2 2280,Capacity 512 GB,Interface NVMe

    WD Black (your choice)
PCIe Gen3 speeds up to 6500/4100MB/s Up to 4TB capacity Bootable and easy-to-install RAID0 solution using PCIe slot.

IMO, the WD Black 4TB SSD is too big, Crucial quotes 2TB SSD maximum for the 54-T.

I would visit the WD forum or e-mail WD Support that your Sfift 5 laptop won't start with the WD Black 4TB PCIe SSD inserted in a Gen 4.0 PCIe slot.

If this was software related you should have been able to boot to BIOS. I am assuming that you still can boot to Windows with the original 512GB SSD?

I already have a WD Black 2TB working well but I just wanted to upgrade. I will speak to Western Digital and see what they say and then report back here with any updates.
    Thanks for you help.

I have been using a 2TB WD Black but just wanted to upgrade.
The 4TB SSD is know to work in another PC & Laptop so it is not DOA.

There should be no problems with putting any size drive in there that you wish. Your machine's M.2 slot is PCIe 3.0 with support for NVMe x4, so most any NVMe drive will work at the 3.0 speeds.
