Acer's Spin 713 need to be different, why?Unhappy with chrome OS for not getting the updates

I like my Spin 713, and the two previous Spin 713s, but Acer's need to depart from Chrome OS is irritating. For years, the Android System Webview app wouldn't update. Acer had their own Webview but my Acer kept trying. Now, suddenly, it can update with the standard Android System Webview. Chrome OS updated to 112 a week ago but not my Spin 713. Who knows when it will update. Now, if I go to Beta Channel it's on 112 but not Stable Channel.

I remember the Goth kids that drove merchants downtown nuts. They collected on the busiest corning wearing black combat boots with three-inch soles, black pants, black shirt, black duster, and a mohawk haircut dyed purple. "Why do they have to stand on the busiest corner?" My response was simply, "You don't dye your mohawk purple so no one will notice you." Acer is the Goth of the chromebook world.

Look at Acer. We're different. Not better. Just, well, different You can wait weeks for the update as with the Spin 714 because we're different.

If I would find another brand with a premium chromebook with a 3:2 screen, I'd give it a try.

Acer had their own Webview

Why? Hmmm? I'm gonna guess the marketing department thought it would sell Did I guess right?

Be aware that Acer doesn't do the OS on Chromebooks, that's all in Google's lap.

I'm assuming Acer starts with Chrome OS from Google and customizes it. That's why Webview is unique to Acer and the Chome OS updates are always late for Acer. My HP 2x 11 chromebook updated to Chrome OS 112 seven days before my Acer updated. When I had the Spin 714 the rest of the world was three updates beyond the Acer 714.

Acer doesn't do the ChromeOS updates either. Google does the ChromeOS updates. So ask the google forums why.

I don't believe Acer customizes the OS build, though they might pre-install some apps or features.

I'm still trying to find out what problem this apparent update lag is causing in actually using the machine.

Now, my assumptions were apparently wrong.

There are a couple reasons for this: first, with 4-week updates, there are smaller changes from one version to the next; and second, if you are a bit late (like we are right now), the next OS version is upon you rather abruptly.

However, the vast majority of devices we’re currently testing are all still stuck on ChromeOS 111 and as of just a few minutes ago, that is still the case. I bought an Acer Spin 714 and after six weeks gave it to a friend's son to use for school. I loathed the 16:10 screen. It also ran two updates behind my HP x2. I went looking for other 3:2 aspect ration chromebooks and not only found no where listing them but found a lot of spec sheets that don't even list the aspect ration. I suppose were supposed to be able to figure it out from the number of pixels.

So, I apologize for my erroneous assumptions and find the delayed arrival of updates just as irritating as before.

Heh-heh. Yes, but the metaphor is more like being 81.2 yo and wishing you were still 81.1. In most cases, these updates are marginal hardly noticeable improvements that take time to deploy on all mainboard designs. Some mfrs get it earlier them others but eventually they all should get there till the EOL.

I de-chromified my Spin 713, I put Linux on it, and it works great. It's not for the faint of heart, but it is do-able. I've used both Ubuntu and CacyOS on it and everything seems to work well, the only special consideration was the audio driver, you have to fight a bit with it.
