E5-575 laptop burning smell but only at startup

I've read lots of posts about what to check when a laptop has a burning smell, but mine seems different. It only smells when I turn it on. After a minute or so, the smell goes away. Any thoughts what might be the cause?

Clean your thermal module surface as it must have deposited dust on the cpu and gpu section of this module that has contact with the cpu and gpu. Take this module out and clean it with alcohol and repaste the cpu/gpu and clean the fans. As the thermal module gets affected first, also check the motherboard circuitries around the DC port and connecting plug that connects to the power stage of the mobo for any signs of any overheating or discoloured chips that may still be working but they emit this smell, like capacitors, mosats, as that could also be a cause of this smell.

Maximum power is applied to fans for a few moments after startup. So they heat up a bit. And might give a burning smell especially if dust has accumulated on them over time. Try alternately vacuuming the air intake vents on the bottom and blowing air into the air exhaust vents using an ordinary vacuum cleaner or shop vac. This will help clear any accumulated dust and debris without opening the laptop.
