I have Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52 laptop. It has Core i7 8th Gen 8750H Processor 16GB RAM, 1TB HDD, GeForce GTX Graphics 1050 Ti- 4 GB, 230GB Samsung Nvme SSD.

It is running Windows 10 22H2, build 19045.2604

Today I experienced this issue twice. I was working in Cinema4D and my laptop froze all of a sudden with these glitchy artifacts appearing on the screen.

[Edited the thread to add model name to the title]

It was on charging. Then I rebooted my laptop and there was no display. I tried restarting it multiple times by force power down by holding the power button but encountered the same, (more on the power button later). In order to find out whether windows OS got corrupt or some hardware issue, I kept presssing F2 and Del to enter the BIOS. I got blank screen. I realized that the laptop was giving a beep sound on switching off/on the charger during that time. That beep sound always comes whenever I switch on the power from the mains during the bootup of laptop. While usage of laptop normally, that beep sound never came.

Then, I forced powered it down. I left it switched off for 20 minutes or so, no charging happening during that time. Then it booted normally after me successfully pressing the power button. I ran "chkdsk /f /r c:" in admin cmd prompt after reaching desktop screen. I restarted and then it checked for errors at startup and I noticed that it was fixing errors too during the percentage progress that showed up.

Everything went fine for an hour after which I put my laptop to hibernate like I do frequently. After 30-40 minutes passed by, I switched it on again. Then I was working on it without having it plugged in. After 45 minutes of working then I faced the same issue of glitchy artifacts on screen and laptop freezing. Both of these troubles happened while doing very basic and light weight 3D modeling in Cinema4D.

I am using latest Nvidia studio driver version 528.49 . Have my graphics drivers got corrupt? I haven't installed any new software, neither done any major windows update in the last 7-8 days (or more as far as I can recall). At first I thought that it was screen trouble. But now I am unable to figure out.

I have been also having an issue of pressing the power button for 5-6 seconds to have my laptop startup since I guess July or August 2022. I created a thread here.

https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/670552/laptop-taking-a-long-time-to-get-powered-on-acer-nitro-5-an515-52#latest

I use the method given here now as a workaround to power on my laptop.

https://community.acer.com/en/discussion/comment/958732/#Comment_958732

Copy pasting the process that I use.

Apparently, there is a pressurized micro-switch somewhere in the middle of the keyboard, near the letters X C V D F. I pressed down near that spot and push the power button at the same time, and finally the laptop turned on. For safe measure, I put pressure on the spot below the letters of the keyboard. This also works the same way when typing with other keys on the keyboard.

It was mentioned that "Don't press down too hard, otherwise you may damage the internal hardware.". Have I damaged something internal accidentally?

I am creating this post right now while typing on the same laptop only.

    1. What CPU/GPU & GPU temps are you seeing in the NitroSense app while fussing with 4D?
    2. When did you acquire the machine?

The CPU GPU temps are around 40 degrees celsius when I was working on Cinema4D. I bought this machine in March 2019.

I got the same glitchy artifacts on my login screen 20 minutes ago after powering on my laptop. I guess this issue is not software specific.

I got the CPU and GPU temperatures from the Acer Nitro Sense app.

When it happens, Do you see the same on an external screen?

I never get a chance to connect to an external screen. When that glitch happens, I force shutdown my laptop. Then when I reboot, the screen stays blank. I reboot after 20-30 minutes, it boots normally. Then I face the glitch again. Now I have uninstalled and reinstalled intel drivers and nvidia studio drivers. I used Display Driver Uninstaller in safe mode. So far so good.

Try to connect an external monitor to rule in or rule out a problem with the GPU. If the external monitor doesn't show the glitch, then it might simply be the LCD video cable or its connectors, nothing wrong with the internal screeen itself.

Okay, yesterday I was at home when I made the forum post. I had an external monitor connected for the whole time. For good 4 hours, my laptop ran fine and after that I put it to hibernate before going to bed. Today I was out, I faced the glitch again. I did not have any external monitor available around me. The glitch was so severe that my entire screen was filled with that.

Try to be around an external monitor. Since it seems to be intermittent, my best guess is the LCD video cable or connectors, not the lid screen itself.. If the glitches only appear on the lid screen but not an external screen, then it further validates my guess.

I am at home, I have been working on this laptop now, connected to an external widescreen monitor for almost 1 hr 30 minutes. No problems so far. There is definitely an issue with the screen of my laptop.

We need to determine whether it is a hardware or software issue..   Turn off the computer.   Tap f2 while turning on the computer.   It will go to bios.   Please stay on the bios screen for 30 mins.    If the display is looking good on bios then it is a software issue.   If the display is not looking good on the bios screen then it is a hardware issue.

If it is a software issue try the following the steps..

    Try windows x

    go to device manager

    expand display adapter

right click on display driver - uninstall

    Restart the computer

    It should work fine..

If it is still not working

Uninstall the display adapter from device manager

    Don’t restart the computer.

    Go to support.acer.com

    chose your country

type snid or chose your model

    go to drivers

    Install the display driver

    It should work fine..

Click on "Yes" if it answers your question.

Yes. Understood. But we need to find out if the external monitor does or does not show the same behavior. That will rule in or rule out a graphics adapter problem. Then we can proceed further to try to find a solution.

Since my last post here, I played a 60 minute video with1080p resolution in full screen mode on laptop. Finished a short video edit in Premiere Pro and exported it successfully. All this while being connected to an external monitor.
It is probably a hardware with laptop screen issue. Earlier I have faced glitches while starting my laptop and entering my password on the login screen, doing normal google search in Chrome, working on a Google sheet in chrome and doing very lightweight 3D modeling in Cinema4D.
Had it been a driver issue, it would have got resolved yesterday only after clean uninstall and fresh install of Nvidia and Intel display drivers. I never download drivers from Acer website. I use Nvidia Geforce experience to download+install latest studio drivers and intel driver assistant to download and install latest Intel GPU drivers or any intel drivers.

Yes. It probably is a hardware issue. Now we' must try to find out if it is the screen, lcd cable or graphics adapter by having an external monitor connected so when it happens we can see if it also affects the external monitor or not.

Okay. This is super weird. I have been watching a 1 hour long video while being connected to an external monitor. Now since the last 15 minutes, I put my projection mode to extended after reading your post.

So on the larger LG external widescreen monitor (2560x1080), I am watching a 1 hour long video, while on my laptop screen, another 1 minute video is being played on loop. No glitches so far.

The glitch problem has been so bad that if my laptop was not connected to an external monitor, then within 2-3 minutes of booting up, I face a glitch. I really appreciate your prompt response dude! You've been very helpful in this chase against the trouble!

Can you quickly switch the LG to mirror the internal display if/when a glitch happens?

No. Whenever the glitch happened, the laptop froze totally. If I connected the HDMI wire of the monitor to my laptop, the mirror wouldn't happen.

I went to my most trustworthy computer repair shop today. He checked and removed two sticks of 8GB RAM and inserted an old 8GB RAM stick (after powering off the laptop of course). The laptop ran fine with no glitches for good 30-40 minutes. I was in disbelief. Then he put my RAM sticks in the slots after I asked him to, and after that the laptop ran fine for 5-10 minutes before glitching and freezing. Then he removed the RAM sticks , and then he inserted his own RAM stick into the slot. The laptop ran fine. I eventually purchased two new RAM sticks of 8GB each from him and he installed into my laptop. My laptop has small section for replacing the RAM and one doesn't have to open the entire case of the laptop. He didn't touch any area of my laptop. He worked only in the area of RAM. I watched the entire repair process in front of me. Ever since the laptop has been running fine.

It is still getting hard for me to believe that this screen glitch was happening because of faulty RAM.
