Hi I have an Acer Extensa EX2540 Notebook PC that is loosing the screen while starting. The only way I can start it is by keeping the space bar pressed but if i take my finger off the bar it will close down. If i keep my finger on the bar it will go to login but wont stay on. The only time it will stay on is if it goes to a log in screen that the mouse wont work with. Any ideas

A safety interlock switch might cut power to the mainboard if the bottom cover loose or misaligned with the top cover. Pressing on the on the spacebar might be deforming the top cover enough to keep the switch in the on position. When you release the spacebar, the switch cuts power again. First, try gently tightening all the the screws on the bottom cover so the cover presses harder against the switch to keep it on..

Yes, there are two switches on the bottom of the motherboard, so Jack's suggestion is worth following up on.

    Hi

Thanks both I checked the switches out and watched a YouTube video on the subject. I tend to believe that it is a software issue. I have been able to get the desktop up but the keyboard won't type so had to use the on screen keyboard to log in. It looks like the problem has been the automatic window 10 update that happened the day according to the log. Now my main problem is getting a functional keyboard, I suspect I need a compatible keyboard driver, any suggestions.

Open Control Panel. Seach ‘restore point’. Click ‘create a restore point’ in left pane. If System Protection is turned on in the box that pops up, click the System Restore button. Click next. Do you see an automatic restore point with a date stamp or the day about when the issue started?

Yes, if the computer boots up it's not an issue with an open switch. Has the case been opened? Maybe the cable running between the motherboard and keyboard is disconnected or the ends have some corrosion. Reseating the contacts might help if that's the issue. Any external keyboard plugged into a USB port will work until you get it figured out. No special drivers needed.

Thanks for getting back. Yes I have had the case open to repair a hinge after it didn't boot but after I had assembled it the keyboard let me login but the mouse didn't work . Now everything works except the keyboard won't type. But I do know the keyboard is working because if I press any key the computer starts but if I type anything in word or the search engine the writing won't show. It's as if I was typing using white letters instead of black. Is there a way of checking the keyboard font. Thanks Keith

Can you see the cursor move to the right as you type? If not, search 'cmd' in the Windows start menu. Click on command prompt app near top of screen. At the command prompt, enter ‘dir’. Post a screenshot of result if possible
