Acer Liquid E2 DUO hangs and crashes when trying to unlock

Hello,

I have big problems with my Acer Liquid E2 DUO. Almost every day when I try to unlock it by touching the power button, the screen won't turn on and the phone doesn't give any sign of life. Then I have to hold the power button for 10 seconds and it reboots and then it acts normally.

This is my second Acer Liquid E2 DUO. The first one did the same thing.

I have updatet my phone to the latest firmware and I only use some apps like Twitter, Candy Crush Saga and so on.

Am I doing something wrong?

There is one thing that I'm doing different from other Acer Liquid E2 DUO users. I am not using two SIM cards. But from now I am going to use two SIM cards.

I hope it won't crash anymore. I will post the results of this 'experiment' in a few days.

I've had this lock up once in the two weeks I've had the phone. Didn't know about holding down the power button so just removed the battery and reinserted. I doubt it is due to having one sim installed and probably some kind of software error. Be interesting if anyone else has had this problem.

Oh, thank God I'm not the only one! I call it comatose mode. The issue is driving me mental, I'm going to have to send the phone in for repair. I'd be very interested in comparing notes with you guys. Here's what I've been able to ascertain so far:

    • The issue seems to be related to the phone's "sleep" mode when the screen is turned off, either by inactivity or by pressing the power button. The length of time the phone is "asleep" for seems to be an important variable - the longer the phone is "asleep", the more likely it is to become "unresponsive".
    • By "unresponsive", I mean the phone has actually switched itself off and cannot be switched back on without a battery removal (or possibly holding power for 10 seconds). I tested this by ringing the phone when it became unresponsive. The call went straight to voicemail.
    • The only method I've used to bring the phone back to life myself is taking out the battery and putting it in again. I haven't tried bassie9's method of holding the power button yet, I will test that next chance I get.
    • It is possible to "catch" the phone as it is in the midst of the behaviour leading up to a coma. Right before the coma, the screen might take up to 10 seconds to turn on. When it does turn on, the phone will be sluggish and may not connect to WiFi or network despite indicating that it is connected. The next time the screen goes off, the phone will go into a coma.
    • Having apps running or not (foreground or background) seems to have no effect either way.
    • The selected unlock mode for the screen has no effect (tested swipe and pattern).
    • The amount of "charge" in the phone's battery seems to have no effect either way. This was tested by catching the phone just as it was about to go into a coma and immediately charging it fully. When I went to switch on the screen, the phone had gone into a coma.
    • Other than that, my phone hasn't undergone any major changes. I typically don't have many apps running in the background. I don't use my phone much. My phone hasn't taken any damage whatsoever.
I might try unrooting and resetting the phone next, to see if the issue persists.

Would love to hear what you guys have found and if there are similarities in our experiences. This issue only started for me about two weeks ago. I can't remember a change that I made, or update that was released, that could have caused this. It's all very confusing and frustrating, mostly because apart from this issue, I really like this phone!

I finally found the solution. You can't use the Acer Liquid E2 DUO with one SIM card inserted. You must have inserted two SIM cards, or the phone will crash repeatedly.

    Thanks Acer! Smiley Mad

I'm not convinced the problem is due to having just 1 sim inserted - when I was using just 1 sim I got the problem just once in two weeks. Either there is a problem with the hardware or the software, hopefully just the software and will be fixed either in the new update or the one that follows.

Unfortunately, I've been using two SIM cards the whole time. I meant to mention that in my 1st post, sorry. I don't think the number of SIM cards is a contributor.

I hope Acer will recognize this problem and they will release an update soon that will solve this problem.

Does anyone from Acer read this forum and take any kind of action based on the issues that are posted?

    Hello everyone,

Happy to read this topic because I have the exact same problem. I have the phone for only 10 days now, and this has happened 3 times already.

-I have all the time been using 2 sim cards

-In the first 2 times the phone was in sleep mode quite a while and connected to wifi

-In the3rd time I had used the phone 2-3mins before then went to check it again and there was no response. I had to hold it for about 10 sec so it could restart.

-in the 3rd time I had not logged in the 2nd sim.

I mostly see a problem with wifi + sleep mode. Sinc eyou all have this I do not link this to the device it seems to be a problem of Acer E2 Duo range.

But can someone from Acer comment on this? Are there any fixes??

Last week there was an update released. Maybe the update will solve this problem.

But my Acer Liquid E2 DUO doesn't crash anymore.

Hi MD101b, sorry to hear you're having our issue. Welcome to the support group Smiley Tongue. It does seem to be a problem with sleep mode, it's interesting to hear that you've linked WiFi to the problem though. Have you experienced the issue with WiFi turned off?
I for one haven't had much of a chance to experiment with the phone recently. My next move will probably be to return it for repair though. Has anyone got to that stage yet?

I have the same problem. Hopefully someone finds a solution for this. At the moment I have to restart my phone at least 2 or 3 times a day. And I never know for how long it already had been offline and unreachable for incoming calls. this sucks!

Maybe how the phones are being used is the problem. I turn my phone off every night, only switch on wifi when I want to use it and close apps when I've finished with them (by holding the back key and selecting each app in turn and removing from the list). Prior to removing them manually I was using Cleanmaster. I've only had the issue in this topic once and it was before I started using Cleanmaster (I got into the habit of cleaning when open apps meant that less than 300 MB) was left. Maybe some of you with the issue should try what I do for a few days and see if you still get the issue.

I think it normally shouldn't  be neccesary to do this everytime you used an app. I mean the recent apps function has been built into Android so that it could be used. If you constantly have to remove items, the function doesn't make much sense.

I agree, but if it prevents the problem worthwhile doing and will give Acer a pointer to what the problem is (which would probably mean the problem is memory related).

Hmm... still no news? It didn't occur so often anymore, but just happened again. I hope they will do something about this problem.

I have had my phone for about 3 weeks and it's happened twice. Once was overnight and the other time was when I was actually in the process of using it. I wasn't very concerned the first time it happened because I was using it and thought, as a new user, I might have pressed the power button too long or something and did it myself (I can't really remember now what I was doing). But of course the second time when it happened overnight I became concerned and on googling it, I found your posts. I've decided to wait and see if it happens again and if so, I will send it for repair. Very frustrating because, as people have said you don't know that you're missing calls.

I have this phone since 16 june 2013. I use 1 SIM slot and installed a 32GB SD card. After using it for some weeks I have the same problems. It won't wake up anymore by pressing the power button on top. Sometimes a screen appears, so that it looks like it's working again, but it doesn't receive any calls. After that it stops working. I often get complaints that I am unreachable. You have to press the power button for 10 sec to get it back alive again. Turning off the phone with a full battery in the evening results often in an empty battery in the morning. Also the receiver signal is often poorer then on other smartphones. Today it already crashed 3 times. As a phone it really isn't usable anymore. As a small tablet it may do some useful work. I only installed 5 small apps, whatsapp, skype, ebay, etc, no games. I will return it for repair, but I doubt Acer has a solution, since I do not read any useful solutions to this problem from them. Anyway, it could be a nice phone when it would do what it supposed to do: reliably receive and handle phone calls. I am really dissapointed.

I downloaded 2 different OS files with exactly the same name but different contents:

The first file was downloaded from this forum under subject: "Liquid E2 stock ROM", that states that this is the latest file is for the Liquid E2 duo:

    http://community.acer.com/t5/Smartphones/Liquid-E2-stock-ROM/m-p/128057#U128057

If you open this zip file you will see some files dated in 2013. Size is about 430MB.

I also downloaded the same filename from http://www.acer.nl/ac/nl/NL/content/drivers

After entering the serial nr of the phone, you can download an OS firmware (look at bottom of the page) with exactly the same name. Windows will rename the filename with the adding of .. (1).zip, before downloading, since the filename is the same. This file size is however about 420MB. If you open this zip file you will see totally different files all dated 22-2-2012.

I installed this earlier version (since I suspect that the latest is buggy) on my phone using the following procedure:

    OS update SOP.
    0. Make sure the phone is powered off (e.g. take off and put on the battery).
    1. Copy update.XXXXXXXX.zip to external SD card, insert the SD card into the phone.
    2. Long press 'Power button' + “Vol_Up button” until Select Boot mode shows
    3. In menu, you could press “Vol_up button”to move the arrow to [Recovery Mode]; then press “Vol_Down button” to enter.
    4. The android robot mark with a "!" icon shows on Screen==> please press power button
    5. Use Vol_Down to move highlight to Choose "apply update from external sdcard",
    then press "Vol_Up"
    6. Choose the SD card update image (e.g. sd_update_Acer_AV061_V370_1.001.00_WW_GEN1.zip).
    7. Phone shall start the upgrading. It will back to menu mode when process is done.
    8. Please choose 'wipe data/factory reset' & 'Yes' if you want to factory reset device.
    9. Choose 'Reboot system now' to reboot the phone.

It's now working for 24 hours without problems. Fingers crossed...

Don't now why this file has different contents under the same name..... Makes life even more difficult.
