PO5-640 I'm trying to upgrade my upgrading the cpu cooler to Noctua u12a

Hi

I'm trying to upgrade my cpu cooler to a Noctua u12a so that I can get more quieter and better cooling features. Right now I'm trying to figure out whether I can use the backplate that was initially there from the start because I don't want to remove the motherboard and install the noctua backplate since, the backside of the cpu part of the motherboard is completely sealed. Has anyone installed a noctua cooler using the Acer backplate that was initially there?

If you look at the Noctua NH-U9S installation manual you don't need to take the mobo out and/or the back plate, all you do is take the OEM LGA1700 cpu bracket out and mount the Noctua NH-U9S LGA1700 brackets on top of the OEM 4x screws and then mount the actual NH-U9S cpu cooler onto its brackets (see diagrams from the manual below) this cooler is the proper small sized cpu cooler that fits into your PO5-640s desktop's spaces, see the NH-U9S PDF manual below that I've included below also for the full guide of how to mount this cpu cooler..

Look at the Noctua manual and video of how its best to fit their coolers. Also, the usual cpu coolers that are fitted to these Predator desktops like your PO5-640 is the NH-U9S chromax.black or the NH-U9S so look at their fitment manuals and not the NH-U12A this cpu cooler is too big.

    1. NH-U12A - Height (without fan) 158 mm, Width (without fan) 125 mm, Depth (without fan) 58 mm
    2. NH-U9S Chromax Black or NH-U9S Height (without fan) 125 mm, Width (without fan) 95 mm, Depth (without fan) 68 mm

Can I keep the same backplate if I'm installing U9S?

I just installed the u12a, fits fine and has my CPU temp 30C cooler. Easy to install, took about 30 minutes. I reused the frostblade from the original cooler as a top exhaust as well.

do you have fans on both sides ? and if not i assume its pulling air into the cpu from the front 2 ? then out the rear ? and u said the top is exhaust also thats cool... and how easy was it too mount that fan on the top ?

Yeah the u12a has two fans, one on either side of the radiator. Front intake rear exhaust straight out the rear case fan. The extra top exhaust also helps get some air into the top part of the case which should help cooling. Super easy to mount the extra case fan, there are already holes drilled in the case. Just reused the screws from the original CPU cooler and some extra nuts from AMD side of the noctua hardware.

i was thinking about that top fan as an intake did you think of that? and have you tried it to see if it makes a difference as either intake or exhaust? I'm almost thinking it would help more as an intake and how do you monitor the noctua does it have software, so you know what its running at etc.?

I installed the NH 9US and had to buy M3 screws from Amazon as the ones included with NH 9US were to big. Is this expected?

It is. The fact that M3 screws are needed is mentioned in many posts about Noctua cooler upgrade on this forum.

@chugzilla Solid idea, I could definitely optimize the airflow a little better swapping some fans around but I am pretty happy with the temps I'm getting now. Next time I open the case for upgrades or service I'll make those changes and report back.

ok no one that has installed a noctua has said anything on how the fans are controlled when replacing the CPU one.... does the predator sense still control it?

My experience is with PO3-620, but I think that PS controlled fans just fine. One thing to keep in mind is that I replaced the rear exhaust fan and CPU fan at the same time. Therefore I'm not sure if replacing only CPU fan will cause some interesting results.

Noctuas run a lot slower than OEM ones do; for example NF-A92 PWM has RPM range of 400 - 2000.

The original INTEL CPU fan and 92mm Frostblade(s) sounded like they were spinning way over 4000 RPMs and still failed to keep the CPU cool.

In my opinion, people swapping fans shouldn't be too concerned about PS and how it controls replacement fans. There are many examples on this forum proving that the CPU temps came plummeting down and fan noise was a lot less annoying.

    NH-U9S

Fan works perfectly and reduces temp by 30 C.

Jep M3 Screws are missing in my package to.

Fans max rpm are at 2000, it is controlled via mobo but you can controll it on Predator sense to.

Auto mode in Predator sense works for that one perfect and you dont have adjust fan speed manually any more.

Some better pics of the NH-U12a in the pO5-640-UB12 for a better idea of clearances. U12a has a fan on either side of the radiator for better airflow, but is a bit larger than the U9s.

good pictures and thx for those of us who haven't done that yet...it's nice to see how much room is left...not much Haha because i honestly was going to go with the next model up the dual fan nh-15 series but i assume it will not fit lol and then that leaves us with what to do with the extra fan up top intake or exhaust guess when i do mine ill see what way keeps it cooler and when it comes to buying to noctua where have you guys been getting yours at ?

and patches is it an illusion...it looks like your 4th stick of ram is taller than the rest.?

i can see the color is black-green-black-green though just something i noticed lol

@chugzilla just an illusion lol, all the ram is seated properly. Although it wasn't when I first installed and got the loud beep when powering up. Ram is the Crucial 4400 recommended on their site.

Definitely not enough clearance for a D15, but the U12 is a beast and works great. I can control fan speeds from PS still.

I swapped the top fan from exhaust to intake, my CPU is stable at 53 now under heavy load so definitely go intake with the extra fan up top.

I ordered the NHU12 from Amazon.

53 wow what kind of games do you play and what are your settings? mine only hits 61 when playing Days Gone or the new Shadow of the Tomb raider or Ghostbusters spirits unleashed game, but they settle down and stay at 55-59 mainly. seems to peak at 61 sometimes i notice 63 sometimes <-71 but that's only when it loads Days Gone->-and it's not even every time-> or is in a cinematic sequence. all my settings are default i don't even see how they can go any higher because there all at the highest settings it goes anyways i have checked lol and Terminator Resistance stays in the 49-53 range. I'm not even sure i need to upgrade now. maybe just 2 more fans for up top for intake is all i would need if even that.

Biggest power draw for me has been Cyberpunk maxed with RT on at 2k 165hz, thats when I was hitting high 90s on CPU before the cooler upgrade. If you're sitting lower than ~75, I wouldn't think you'd need an upgrade, but if you're planning on running some of the newer games maxed out, might be worth it in the future. Reading some stuff online, it looks like ~80 degrees is where things can start to deteriorate long term.

yeah, well I'm new to gaming that's why i only have the few i do i have no idea what direction to go....i love Days Gone and from reading the forums there is nothing else like it and i also love Terminator Resistance and there is nothing like that....i just started playing that Tomb raider game. its new from 2021 and it uses ray tracing and all that good stuff i have a 1080p 240 HZ acer predator monitor i use and the frame rate is maxed out and I'm still only at 60 C so I'm not sure Haha
