Hi,

A family member just purchased an Acer S3-391 with Win 8 pre-installed which he hates. He wants to revert back to WinXP.

Is it possible to install WinXP on this machine? Are drivers available?

Yes, I think it can. But unfortunately the driver isn't available for Windows XP.

Thanks for the response, however is it not a little contradictive? If no drivers available, it wouldn't really be possible to install and use Win XP.

It is certain that Win XP drivers are not available? Thanks again for your response

Alt, I strongly advise your family member not to do this. Windows XP is the greatest OS ever made for single-core computers--yours is dual-core. Tell them to do this instead:

On the Start Page, drag the tile for Desktop to the top left corner. Now you only have to press Enter to go to the Desktop. From the desktop, go online and install the free Classic Shell program. This will put a Start Button on your desktop and it will now run like Windows XP.

I don't know which version of the Aspire S3-391 your relative owns, but that is a fairly modern (two years old) rig with a lot more muscle than XP was designed to handle. Even if you can solve the driver problems, you will never get it to run as well on XP as on Windows 8.

Thanks for the advise. I will go with the option of installing an XP shell; didn't know such a thing existed.

    Thanks!

But why he want to revert it back -to XP??? But if he hates windows 8 that much, it's better to downgrade it into Windows 7 and just install the XP Skin, it'll looks more XP.

I agree with Vince, it still astounds me when I read that so many people use/want to continue to use XP because they don't like Windows 8, rather than giving Windows 8 a chance (it is a decent operating system) but even more astounding is why not use Windows 7 like Surya said? In my opinion, Windows 7 is the best OS Microsoft have developed to date.

I am now starting to like Windows 8 just as much as I did 7, because the start screen I am beginning to find is so much more powerful and user friendly than the old start button.

My advice, give Windows 8 a go Smiley Happy it's the future, Windows XP is nearing 12 years old, ancient for an operating system, and as Vince has said, XP wouldn't be able to even recognise half the hardware in your new machine, let alone know what to do with it.
