What is the max RAM for ConceptD 7 Ezel - Problems with 64GB

What is the maximum RAM for a ConceptD 7 Ezel Laptop (CC715-71-7196). I cant seem to locate anything acer official to tell me.

Crucial says its 64GB, but I'm having big troubles trying to get 64GB running reliably on my system.

I've installed 2 DDR4 2666 32GB modules (to replace the factory 2 DDR4 266 8GB mdules). The results have been frustrating becasue theyve been highly variable. I've had the computer boot up fine and the "BIOS" and OS bot detect 64GB (and run fine) - but have also had the system flat out not boot, and also had it boot but only show It was running 32GB in both the "BIOS" and OS (While a utility, speccy, showed that it was detecting 2 modules totalling 64GB as the OS was reporting 1 module at 32GB).

I've systematically put one 32GB module in at a time and booted the computer, then did it again in the other slot - everythig seems to say that both modules are just fine and the issue isnt with the memory itsself. any combination of module and slot results in a working system reporting 32GB and booting reliably.

When I add the second module - things get weird. On the first boot up (if it boots up, more on this) the BIOS shows 64GB installed, then the OS will show 64 GB installed and usable once it boots up too. I can shutdown the system and boot up the system - BUT it seems when i "restart" out of windows things go haywire and on the next boot the OS will show only 32GB of memory! So then I shut down and check the BIOS and it too now only shows 32GB of memory installed!. The computer then boots, reboots, restarts reliably but only thinks it has 32GB (even though 64 is physically installed and was initially reported everywhere). I flat out dont get whats happening here.

I can pull one module out when that happens, reboot, shut down, reinstall it and reboot again and I'm back to showing 64GB memory... untill i do a restart. From there other combinations of restarting and entering the bios along with saving or not saving settings when I exited the bios have resulted in times when the system just wont start at all and I'm unable to even get to the BIOS screen..... untill I pull one module.

It seems a little like it only will take 32GB - but at the same time it dosent make any sense why it will report and run 64GB the first time its installed (and untill a "restart" is done out of windows).

Does anyone else have this laptop with 64GB running, Can anyone from Acer chime in here and help please.

Hi,

Your model supports memory up to 32GB, I think Crucial got it mixed up with the model CC715-91P which can be upgraded to 64GB memory.

The reason for your system reads 64GB memory, the motherboard used might be same for this model and CC715-91P and the memory limitation may have been done in the BIOS for this model.

Can I ask where that screenshot comes from? Is there a link. I couldn't find any product info fory model that showed a max.

If my system doesn't support it, then why would the bios recognize it, but also then be able boot the OS which also recognized the 64gb and ran fine? Seems like if it was limited by the bios or board that shouldn't be able to happen at all.

No problem, it was from the Service manual, could you please post the model name/number of the RAM modules, according to Service manual your model supports maximum memory of 32GB(2x16GB).

You could also try Acer Support Centre in your region and ask them, they may be able to explain in detail.

Where can you get a service manual, what model was that info specific to (screenshot doesn't show) was it for a CC715-71 (-7196)

This is Kingston Memory - DDR4 2666 2x32GB modules.

I don't think Crucial/micron mixed up. They have breakdowns for the main CC715-71 model and the sub models/configurations under it. Mine is a -7196 (came with 16Gm RAM installed). They also have a section on their site that states they extensively test memory configurations and guarantee them. (I might go ahead and buy 64GB from them, that they spec for my system, to test - they'll take it back if it doesn't work).

At this point I'm a little more convinced that 64GB really should work on this system. I've done some more testing this morning. I had disabled fast boot in the BIOS previously and it didn't seem to make much difference with boot loops - however disabling windows fastboot (from inside the OS) actually did seem to make a difference. After doing that the computer is starting and restarting without fail after dozens of trys. Computer seems to be 100% reliable as far as booting...

HOWEVER - here's where i'm at now: If it's a fresh boot (shutdown from Windows followed by physically pushing the power button to turn on) the system (both BIOS and Windows OS) will report 64GB of ram installed and usable. BUT if its a windows "restart" the computer will boot back up and show 32GB ram installed and usable (Bios will also only show 32 GB if you interrupt the restart to check). This now happens predictably - I can change how much memory the computer runs by choosing restart or doing a shutdown and restarting via the power button. To me this is bizarre

The computer runs just fine on 64GB. And, if I never do a windows "restart" it will continue to have 64GB RAM through multiple shutdown and power cycles. If i screw up and do a windows "restart" it will boot up with 32GB but doing a shutdown and starting back up with the power button puts it right back at 64GB.

None of that makes sense to me - and to make it just a little more weird on the times that it is "restarted" and boots up as 32GB multiple reporting tools (CPU-Z and Speccy) continue to show that there are actually are two memory modules physically installed and verify they can see a total of 64GB memory.

How can I get Acers attention on this - it would be nice to hear someone chime in. How can I have a system the reliably runs 64gb but flip-flops back to 32GB just because i choose windows "restart" rather than shutdown?

Is Kingston memory module a HyperX model or similar with XMP profile? model number will help find the specifications of the module.

Yes, its basically HyperX (now Kingston Fury).

It said "XMP ready" but only shows one XMP profile/timing in the spec sheet which is the same as the default JEDEC timing. I shopped for the speed, but It didn't seem like there was any risk to the XMP aspect of it based on the published specifications (shows one profile each. it's just running at default speed either way, not overclocked on XMP and not underclocked if XMP wasn't supported on this computer).

I was wondering the same throughout testing though - if XMP was causing issues (you don't have control over XMP on/off in the bios on this computer).

Yes, it could be the incompatibility of the RAM modules cause the instability of the system, you may try memory modules with JEDEC profile like Crucial, I have no idea of any reason for the incompatibility.

Yea, I already ordered some from micron/crucial earlier. I'll test and see if anything is different in a couple days when they arrive.

Well that was a real bummer.....

Crucial/Micron memory didn't yield any better results - in fact I think overall it was worse.

Got my crucial memory today, put it in (same amount 64GB total, 2x32GB modules). The laptop booted up and the BIOS detected 64GB memory on the first boot. Windows OS also saw 64GB. Similar results to the Kingston memory - this would work when you did a cold start (turn on via power button from being shut down) BUT as soon as I tried a windows "restart" things stopped working. Restart with the Crucial memory made the computer not boot back up at all (Unlike the Kingston which would start back up after a "reboot but only detect half of the installed memory).

A little messing around with the Crucial memory didnt improve anything - I went in to the bios, made sure hat fast boot was disabled to see if that mad any difference (it didnt) and I even opened the computer back up and unhooked the CMOS battery to clear that (it didnt help either - it only made the system stop booting on the Crucial memory altogether when the full 64GB was installed - taking one stick out and leaving 32 got it booting again).

In the end I'll just have to abandon trying to run 64GB. Its a shame because it really seems to run fine with it (on the kingston anyway, where I tested it the most) but I just cant take the chance that its going to boot loop at some point when I need my system (and cant deal with the hassle of tearing it apart to get it working) and its not practical at all to have to manage only doing full shutdowns in order to keep it recognizing the full amount of installed RAM.

For now I'm stuck going back to 32GB RAM

This really seems like a small flakey BIOS issue that's keeping this from working rather than an outright inability of this system to use/run 64GB of memory. If anyone knows how to get this message to ACER let me know. Unfortunately my computer is "out of warranty" and that leaves me no lifeline to talk to support that I know of - even though this was a flagship product that should have some longevity and it seems like there should be some support behind it for all the people who bought in.
