Hello all,

I picked up a Predator Orion 300 PO3-640-EC02 a few weeks ago, which has a 1 TB SSD M.2 installed with an i5 12400F and a 3060 ti card. I'd like more storage and apparently the micron ssd isn't the highest quality whereas the other system hardware CPU/GPU seems to work well. I think it would be worth investing in a 4th gen PCIe SSD from Samsung which has a lot better performance for read/write. Unless someone can tell me it's a waste of good hardware then I think I'll go ahead. If anyone has recommendations for the best way to transfer the OS and data to the new drive I'd be grateful for the advice.

Cheers,

Frosty

  • Hi,

Yes, Samsung 980 Pro will be a good upgrade but you won't be able to see the difference in speed, anyway, you have two M.2 NVMe Gen 4 slots, you can use Macrium Reflect free Home version to clone the current drive to the new drive.

Thanks a lot for your reply. Is that because my other hardware won't be able to take advantage of the extra speed? I could go with 970 Evo plus in that case and save 50

The two M.2 SSD slots are different revs of PCIe, one is off the Alder Lake CPU itself and is PCIe 4.0, the other is off the PCH-S in the B660 and is PCIe 3.0. Likely the stock SSD is PCIe 3.0 x4 NVMe, though it would be worthwhile to verify the model number to be sure. If you moved that to the slower port you could get the higher speed on the first port with a 4.0 device.

That's great to know, thank you very much. I'm trying to find out which slot is 4 and which is 3. The empty slot is the vertical one toward the front of the board.

I don't have a screw to install the second SSD on the board, so I am backing up to an external drive and then I will just replace my SSD with the new one and I should be able to restore it from the external storage, correct? I'm using the Western digital backup program.

Possibly... We usually use a cloning package to clone the existing drive to a new one, and an external case to hold the one not in the internal slot. "Backing up" typically just copies the files on the system partition and cloning copies all the partitions, resizing the system partition if appropriate. In order for the drive to be bootable it will need more than just the system partition, at the least it also needs an EFI partition and usually a recovery partition for the recovery environment and another recovery partition with the factory image on it.

Update: I took apart an old laptop to get a proper screw for the M2 ssd. Now it's installed and I just used the Samsung magician clone software which seemed to work well. I cloned my drive onto my larger SSD and switched the boot order so it boots from that drive. The old drive is still full, so I'm wondering if it's safe to format that drive, and what would be the best software to use for that if necessary? It's a micron M2 1 TB SSD

Test first by removing the old drive. If everything boots up and run fine then it's safe to use Disk Management to wipe all partitions off it and reconfigure it to be one big data partition.
