AN515-57 loses charge when turned off the battery doesn't hold its charge over time.

I don't use my Acer that often. Bought it as a stop gap while my pc was being repaired.

The battery doesn't hold its charge over time.

A drop every day.

I turn the laptop off via the windows shut down option.

It's as if the AN515 is still using something while it is turned off.

I've had a few laptops. Never had this with any other.

Ideas please.

Cheers Bob.

  • Hi,

Open Acer Quick Access App, turn off "Power-off USB charging" and see whether it helps.

Na, didn't work. Still losing charge when it's turned off.

Thanks for trying though I appreciate it.

I've turned all power setting set to: "turn off"

Down to 75% yesterday from a full charge on the 25th.

Think I'll charge it back up and check it every 5 days. To monitor the drop.

All I can think of is the power isn't cut off close to the battery.

    Or the battery is crook.

    Cheers Bob.

  • Sorry to hear that it didn't help, how old is the laptop? As you said, it could be the bad battery, anyway, you could try a manual calibration, the instructions are in this link:How to Calibrate Your Laptop’s Battery for Accurate Battery Life Estimates (howtogeek.com)

A year, I think. Unfortunately, product registration doesn't log the date I registered it.

It has been doing losing charge since near new. By near, I used it for 20 days while my game pc was being repaired. Last Xmas.

Since then, I power it up every now and then to check it. The battery/software updates just in case I need it.

Then put it in its pillow for a while longer.

When I really noticed the battery, I started it up every month. And every month its down on charge.

While I can accept some leakage it seems excessive.

My 10-year-old HP takes a lot longer. But the battery on it is a removable one.

The Acer really seems to be running something while shut down.

The power meter on it is deficient. The estimated time to fully charge is out.

Not a lot about 15 minutes from 75% to full. Not great deal.

Thats an interesting article brummyfan2 Thanks.

I'll see if I can find the Acer battery calibration system.

Spent a good portion of yesterday calibrating the battery.

So, it's down to wait and see.

For anyone re-installing the Care Center. I didn't use admin rights first few times. Ended up with one a shot program.

It worked but only once then had to re-install it. Then once and re-install.

    I know I'm slow :-).

The program needs administrator rights to install properly.

    I eventually got there.

Fire it up for the first time since the battery calibration on the 30/12/2022.

8 days ago, down from 100% to 93%. A 7% loss with only 1 startup (this one). I didn't time it, but I suppose roughly 30 seconds power to shut down.

I'll give it some more time and see what the drop is in another 8 days or so.

Fired it up for the second time since the battery calibration on the 30/12/2022 today 26/01/2023

27 days. Down to 73%. which comes out at 1% drop per day. For 27%.

At least the leak is consistent.

    Anyone else have/had this happen?

    Cheers Bob.

I'm having the same problem. I was hospitalized for a month and when I booted up my laptop it was at 63%. It was turned off and nothing was plugged into the USB ports. It loses at least 3% overnight.

My first post may not have triggered as a reply, sorry thick as a brick but getting there. :-):

3% is 3 x higher than my drop. the last time I checked it was still 1% a day I think. Na, last time I looked was the 1/08/2023. So, it's that flat it needs the power pack plugged in to bootup.

Writtene earlier in first post.: →

I've given up. When I go into the shop, I bought it from the salesperson disappears.

So, my only answer is: to never buy Acer again. It's the only laptop I've had battery troubles with. All my HP's the batteries would remain charged for months.

This one is a constant -1% a day.

Possibly/probably, different metal mixes in them. But….

There is another problem with it too. Copying large 100GB +, game files from one usb drive to another can flatten the battery very quickly. Even plugged into the power. A powered hub may help but haven't tried one. I don't do it that often. But worth a mention. Actually, only when getting it ready to play my games. Saving download time by copying their directories from my other pc drives.

I got it because it was labeled as a game laptop. While it could handle games like Witcher 3. It struggled on Horizon Zero Dawn at full spec. Still playable though. So, it did the job mostly.

    My condolences on your purchase.

I hope your fully recovered from your hospital time.

Sorry I'm of no help to you. Good luck.

    Cheers Bob.

It is related to Windows11 "S0 Modern Standby" Microsoft's new Sleep Mode protocol that is difficult to control in Power Plan advanced settings, if you see "USB Selective Suspend" in Power Plan advanced settings turn that off: https://www.elevenforum.com/t/enable-or-disable-usb-selective-suspend-in-windows-11.10251/
Also you may not be fully shutdown but in hibernate mode or hybrid mode if you have Fast Startup enabled, disable both these options. Google this topic it is a common problem for all brand laptops running Windows11.

    Hi Puraw,

    I'm on window 10 19045 Home.

I'll have a look at your suggestions though. It's the best yet.

Yep, you were right it's in windows 10 home as well.

    Thank you. ☺️

I'm charging it up so will check in a day or so to see if it has stopped the drain.

    Cheers Bob.

    Hi Puraw,

Still losing charge. Still looks like 1% per day.

    Thanks for trying though.

I'm going to flag it now. Put it down to being conned by big business.

I don't rely on it so it's only a stopgap and so far, the gaps filled.

Batteries last longer if you can take them out of circuit. My old HP's lasts for years and weren't charged recharged every time I plugged the power in. Because the battery was in a drawer.

I'm tempted to have an on/off switch put in. But I won't.

With luck It'll stay parked and I'll not need it again.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers Bob.
