Hello,

I would like to know if it's possible to upgrade the CPU and graphics card on my Predator G3-710 (i5/Radeon 360 model) in order to play the latest games?

Or would it be better to just buy a new PC?

TIA!

Its the 6th gen model right? If so you can stay within the same gen, but could probably move up to the 6700 ( https://www.intel.co.uk/content/www/uk/en/products/sku/88184/intel-core-i56500-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-60-ghz/specifications.html ) to ( https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/88196/intel-core-i76700-processor-8m-cache-up-to-4-00-ghz.html ) if you went higher than that you may run into thermal issues as it will sip more than 65w

For the GPU is it the R7 or R9? You will need to make sure the PSU can handle enough outputs, i think yours has one 6 PIN and no spares but could be wrong so its worth checking! Im thinking a low power 1060 may be a good option.

It would probs be much cheaper to upgrade, and you would probs be able to play modern games at medium / low

More modern you may also be able to get a 3050 with a single 6 pin, but that may be a tad much watt wise as its more that the 360 pulls , im not too familiar with the AMD side of things at the moment, but could do some reading up if it would help!

    Thanks for the reply.

I'm slightly PC illiterate (lol) but checking the system the CPU is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6400 CPU @ 2.70GHz 2.70 GHz, not sure of the gen and the GPU is a R9.

If anything, I will upgrade the PSU too!

What ever option, I'd like it to be somewhat future proof i.e. last another 2 years at least.

Anymore help/ideas would be highly appreciated! :)

Yes, you can upgrade the GPU and PSU (and will likely have to do both for the higher end cards), though you can't run the CPU or memory faster than the chipset supports, so that is your limitation going forward. You can bump the CPU to an i7-6700 but it's not going to make much difference, if at all, to the overall performance. I'd look seriously at a system upgrade if you have the wallet for it, the new ones are just so much faster.

Thinking of getting this: Gigabyte Radeon RX 6650 XT EAGLE 8GB

this was I won’t need a new PSU

The 6650 supports PCI Express 4.0 but have a 3.0. Does this matter?

I just asked #ChatGPT and it said:

It is generally not a problem to use a PCI Express 4.0 graphics card in a motherboard with a PCI Express 3.0 slot. The PCI Express 4.0 standard is backwards compatible with PCI Express 3.0, so you should be able to use a PCI Express 4.0 graphics card in a PCI Express 3.0 slot. However, the graphics card will only be able to operate at the maximum speed of the PCI Express 3.0 slot, so you will not be able to take advantage of the faster speeds that PCI Express 4.0 offers.

That being said, you may want to consider upgrading your motherboard to one that has a PCI Express 4.0 slot if you want to be able to fully utilize the capabilities of a PCI Express 4.0 graphics card. This will also allow you to upgrade to a faster graphics card in the future if you choose to do so.

That is pretty much correct, but rather than buying a new MB think about buying a cheaper PCIe 3.0 GPU card. :)
