I can't update my Aspire E 15, E5-571-38KJ from windows 7 to windows 10

It's finally time to update my very trustworthy Aspire E 15, E5-571-38KJ, from Windows 7 to Windows 10. In trying to do so, the upgrade keeps failing, telling me "We can't tell if your PC is ready to continue installing Windows 10. Try restarting Setup." The upgrade software (direct from Microsoft) stops there. It doesn't get any farther. Any ideas?

Your Aspire E 15, E5-571-38KJ should be fully compatible with Win-10. The reason why you are getting this error ""We can't tell if your PC is ready to continue installing Windows 10" is because :

"Microsoft has put an immense amount of work into making sure Windows 10 updates happen smoothly. But inevitably, there are a handful of users who experience difficulty during the upgrade. This is due to the millions of configurations that exist and the complexity of making a product like Windows 10 work on the vast majority of them" and your laptop fall within this category.

Do this first as the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) command is a handy diagnostic tool for resolving file integrity issues that might prevent a successful install. Users can run the following commands as part of their prep routine before initiating the upgrade.

Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin), type each command, then hit Enter on your keyboard.

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

Another command you should run is the cleanup driver. Press Windows key + X, click Command Prompt (Admin), then type the following command and hit Enter on your keyboard. Restart your computer when complete. This should help with the notorious failed or non-responsive installation during the driver migration.

    rundll32.exe pnpclean.dll,RunDLL_PnpClean /DRIVERS /MAXCLEAN

Also and imo, and before updating to Win-10 make sure that your E5-571-38KJ has the last BIOS version 1.32 installed, has at least 8GB DDR3-1600MHz (preferably 16GB ram, do the Crucial System Scan) and Win-10 is installed on a new 500GB preferably 1TB 2.5" SATA-3 6GB.s SSD drive, but and if you intend using the old mechanical HDD (which I don't recommend with the i3-4005U CPU as this CPU is already slow) completely delete/format this HDD and then install Win-10 as upgrading the RAM, SSD will make sure that Win-10 will operate better and quicker, also make sure that after Win-10 install, all windows updates are up to date, and if in Device Manager there are any drivers that are not updated use the official Acer drivers to update to.

Also install the Intel® Driver & Support Assistant and do a scan with this software, to make sure all Intel drivers are up to date as that is also very important for this laptop. All this will make this laptop operate perfectly with Win-10. Good luck and hope this helps you out, as I've done all this to older laptops, and they worked perfectly and were a very useful tool operating with Win-10 Home and Pro.

    StevenGen,

Thanks for your detailed response. So far, however, I've not been successful implementing your suggestions. Here's where I am:

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth produced no output other than error message 87. "The checkhealth option is not recognized in this context."

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth worked for several hours, and appeared to complete successfully. A large log file seems to have been produced.

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth produced no output other than error 87. "The restorehealth option is not recognized in this context."

BIOS version 1.32 is installed; I only have 4 GB of RAM, and have the 500 GB HDD that came with the machine.

After running the DISM commands, the Win 10 setup unfortunately still exited as before.

Any further ideas on what I should do?

One more thing--I installed the Intel DSA. But when it runs, it comes back with "No Configuration Data." I reinstalled it, same result.

You need a new HDD as the OEM HDD is faulty and will not work, yes you can do a chkdsk but imo you would be much better off to buy (as I've suggested above) a new 2.5" SSD and start fresh with a Clean Install of Win-10, don't waste your time as your drive has no purpose if its giving you those errors and even if you repair those errors there is a great risk that your future data is at risk of crashing and being destroyed by this faulty mechanical HDD, I've had allot of experience with these drives and its not worth the risk if a HDD is faulty and giving symptoms like you are having. A new SSD 500GB drive is $60 from a reputable manufacturer like Crucial or a bit more from Samsung, so imo its not worth persisting with a faulty HDD, but its up to you.

Thanks again for your quick response. I will upgrade the HDD. Do you really think that's the source of all of the issues I've described?
