Several minutes ago, I had one browser with one Website open, and the machine rebooted.  I checked the BIOS during the reboot process, and I downloaded the complete log lists.  First the BIOS screenshot:

Now for the complete log entries, but please note that I can't get the log to show anything earlier than 1:35:59 PM (and there are a great host of entries for that particular time point).  If I noted it correctly, the reboot occurred at 1:35:xx.  I deleted entries later than the first one listed (but still have them in a document), and I'm using the next few windows to show 1:35:59 through 1:36:01:

Yeah, that should give you a reasonable window into the status. I don't think you are running into overheating shut downs though, typically when those are happening you will see lots of indications it's coming, i.e. the temps don't suddenly soar to 100+, they go up through 70, 80, 90, etc. with the fan getting noisier and noisier on the way. More likely, if it's hardware, is the PSU being flaky. Fluctuating power can easily cause random reboots as well as system crashes that never seem to point to any one thing. Most likely of all though is software, something stepping on the toes of the OS can cause all manner of weird crashes. That's why i was suggesting trying to prove it also happen in Windows, because essentially none of the software is the same. If it crashes in both OSes it pretty much needs to be hardware.

Thanks, Billsey.  Since the voltages seem to be stable in BIOS (assuming that they're indications of proper PSU operation), I'll hold my nose and try working with Win10 Pro for a while to see if reboots still occur.

I've been working with Win10 for about an hour.  About 30 minutes ago, my machine spontaneously rebooted just as I was closing my Brave browser (the only app I had open).  This suggests to me that Brave *might* be an issue, since it has been involved with at least one other reboot (possibly more).

Anyway, I'm less familiar with what Windows can do these days, but I looked up how to access the Events Logs, and I have this to share.  If it's not informative, please tell me what logs I should access.

    ------------
The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

    P. S.  Upon further thought, I know one reboot occurred on the Linux side with only the Chrome browser open.  (I suspect all of you know that Brave is a flavor of Chrome.)

I'd like to have you check to see if any dump files were created with the Windows crash. If so we can dig in deeper using the parsing utilities for those. The Event Log entry you quote just says "something crashed so we had to restart". If it generated a BSOD then it will have written a dump file with the actual faulting item listed, likely a driver, which would then point to the hardware that's causing the issue.

I'll check on the dump files.  Also, I suffered the first spontaneous reboot in the Linux OS while offline, so perhaps browser involvement or online status is not a factor.  Thanks, Billsey!

Have you replace the Bios Battery ?

    Hello,

Have you come up with a solution? My couple of years old Aspire is shutting down randomly also .. usually while watching Youtube.

Also installed a temp app, with no anomalies apparent ..

Did an internal clean and cable check, no help...

Thinking of trying the PSU replacement.

    Thanks for any input!

    J.

I had lots of trouble with You Tube with slow internet speeds and or a slow computer with virus checkers interfering.

Also go to Task Manager and disable all start-up items till you're OK.

Check with Speedamart, Speedeasy and Speedtest apps.

I run CCleaner and clean the register at least twice a week.
