Black Screen on Aspire A515-55T

Bios version : V1.13

Part Number 03023AE27600

Ran Intel Driver and Support Assistant and all Intel drivers are up to date. Ran Acer Care and updated all drivers. All Software is reporting as up to date.

Up to date Windows 11 Home 64-bit

Laptop is clearly on, fan running, two blue lights for power and hard drive but no display. Happens after laptop goes to sleep. Does not happen EVERY TIME laptop goes to sleep. It seems to be occurring randomly.

I've been reading about this issue for weeks all over this community board but have found no solutions that work for me. This issue began about 4 weeks ago at which time there were no (intentional) software or hardware changes to the system. I updated drivers and bios only in response to try and solve this issue, to no avail. Plugging in to external monitor does not show me anything. I have to hold power button for 15 seconds and hard re-boot to get the screen back. Nothing of significance is shown in Event Viewer when this happens. It just goes black.

I can't be certain, but I think this started around 9/9, and I see this in driver updates:

Needless to say, this is HIGHLY annoying since this is my work laptop. Been a LONG time fan of Acer but this is rattling my confidence in the brand.

Any solution would be freaking awesome and eternally appreciated.

    >>>Happens after laptop goes to sleep>>>

By closing/opening the lid? Or by short pressing the power button without touching the lid? Or both?

    Thanks for the reply JackE.

Sleep induced two ways: (1) by closing the lid and (2) by just letting the laptop sit for the time period specified in the power options. These settings have worked for several years without the black screen problem.

Without touching the lid, are you sure the screen remains black when trying to wake it up from timer sleep?

Do a hard reset by unplugging the main battery and bios battery and then shortening the + and - pins on the mobo of both batteries plugs, when disconnected, then reconnecting them both after about 5min, boot laptop up, and wait and be patient as the laptop will take about 1 min + to reboot, as you probably have a partially frozen super IO that is the startup chip, that needs a reset. Let us know as and if this does not work then you have other issues like with the eDP screen/plug cable that is damaged, the 3.3v power that supplies data to the screen, the 15.2V backlight screen issues etc etc that need to be analyzed by an experienced tech.

Yes. Absolutely positive the screen remains black. Both HD and Power lights are blue and one time I was clicking around and tapping keyboard keys and I apparently clicked something that triggered a beep, indicating the machine was on and operating and just not displaying.

What type of reset is this that you are recommending? I'm not familiar with what your suggested process will affect.

Assuming this is not a complete system reset that affects data/programs/etc (This is a work laptop and it would be significant effort for me to re-install everything) is there some sort of step by step video or instructions on how to do this reset? I'm pretty technologically savvy and can follow instructions well but you're referencing things things that are new to me. It would be great to know what compartments I need to access and have some images of what I'm looking at once I'm in.

Lastly, it appears this may be a relatively common Intel UHD Graphics issue. I began looking around for other manufacturers that might be having similar issues and found this.

I'm wondering if this is a hint at the root cause of this issue and an indicator of which path to a solution is appropriate. No sense in chasing possible solutions that don't address the real component causing the issue.

    Thanks

Open Control Panel. Search 'button'. Click 'change what the power buttons do' in left pane. Click 'change settings that are currently unavailable' near top of next pane. Scroll down and UNcheck box for fast startup. Save settings. Shut down Windows normally. Wait a minute or two. Then turn machine back on. Test screen again on wake up.

  • Some devices may also prevent the computer from waking up. Unplug the external monitor and all devices from the usb ports and then check if the issue still occurs.
