The Helios 300 laptop I bought two years ago won't turn on, probably poor design that shorted the motherboard or just a lemon.

This is a reply from Acer customer service: "The standard fee for out-of-warranty repair of this model is currently $969.99 CAD plus any applicable local tax amount"...kind of in anticipation that to fix this model they have to replace the motherboard.  Needless to say, once the warranty is over you are on your own with Acer.

Wondering if anyone has a working used motherboard for sale for this model:

Acer Predator Helios 300 Gaming Laptop, Intel i7-10750H, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 6GB, 15.6" Full HD 144Hz 3ms IPS Display, 16GB Dual-Channel DDR4, 512GB NVMe SSD, Wi-Fi 6, RGB Keyboard, PH315-53-72XD

I forgot to mention that after Acer quoted $1000 for fixing any issue with this model, I had it checked at a local computer store that confirmed the motherboard has a short and cannot be fixed. I figure Acer knew about this model's quality issues and that's why the flat fee for service is high.

IMO, Acer should recall and fix all PH315-53-72XD units with this issue for free, or customers like me would never buy their products and warn others to stay away (eventually this type of poor customer service will catch up with them).

Where is the short in the mobo, as its annoying for a laptop to go bad but accusing and saying "probably poor design that shorted the motherboard or just a lemon" is not very nice and/or will solve your problem as there are many thousands of PH315-53-72XD laptops out there that don't have any problems!

Did Acer give you any details or any written explanation of the laptop's faults? As it could be from many issues that the damage was from, which allot of the times "it's because of the user" as and also, allot of the mobo faults can be fixed if they do not relate to a cpu or a gpu replacement or memory chip problems,

Try other technicians that are specialist in mobo repairs like and what i recommend is NorthbridgeFix, contact Alex the owner/head tech that is in Northbridge CA US area, as he is one of the best around, and if he can't fix your mobo, then its unfixable, as I'm sure that it will be less than USD $1000 (which is a ridiculous price for a PH315-53 mobo) also write him an email about all the faults that you know that is wrong with your mobo, and ask if it can be fixed, as he will tell you 100% what the scenarios are. But, if you send him any jobs in the next 8 weeks, he will only accept the mobo (not a full laptop to be disassembled) as he's got staff shortages. That is what I would do as replacing the mobo with a new one, could give you the same problem and the mobo could burn out the same way.

Btw these are all the mobos fitted to the PH315-53, check reference these Acer part number and see if they match your mobo, as that is the mobo fitted to your PH315-53-72XD, good luck and hope this helps you out.

@dwhitman62 I encountered the same problem as you. My laptop does not turn on and gives no signal when I plug it in. and I saw a technician who confirmed that it is the motherboard which is damaged and irreparable. and estimates the replacement cost at nearly $1000. I'm very excited because I've had this laptop for 2 and a half years already. My warranty is over and I don't think ACER will want to repair it for me because I haven't contacted them yet.

I had the exact same problem. It's a very well known problem with this laptop model (just google 'acer predator pch').

I took mine to a lab specialized in repairing laptop mobos and they told me it's a pch short and it's unrepairable.

I simply cannot understand why ACER doesn't do the only decent option which is to replace the faulty laptops for free. We trusted our money to very expensive product from ACER and we were scammed by a company that surely knew (and knows) about this well known design fault.
