Did you revamp the cooling when installing that CPU? The i7-6700K requires a lot more cooling than the i5-6400. We almost never recommend the i7-6700K over the i7-6700 due to the added cooling needed.

  • Have a look at the specs of your new i7-6700K here and its upgradability Core i7-6700K which is a 4 cores / 4 Threads / 4 GHz Frequency to 4.2 GHz Turbo Frequency / 1MB L2 Cache / 8MB L3 Cache / TDP 91W cpu that has an 97% Upgrade Chance to your existing i5-6400 cpu.

If you compare the two specs of the i5-6400 and the i7-6700K cpu's, you can see from the Thermal Design Power: of the i5-6400 which is 35W to the i7-6700K TDP that is 91W, you can calculate the difference, the i7-6700K runs 160% higher in TDP which means allot hotter than the i5-6400 CPU and that is why you need to run this CPU with a much better HEATSINK/FAN CPU cooler. I would suggest a Noctua type dry CPU cooler setup (as they are the best and cheapest for performance/value) go to the Noctua site and look for an appropriate Socket 1151 cpu cooler, first measure your internal spaces that you have for this cpu cooler and then choose an appropriate cpu cooler for your i7-6700K Socket 1151 cpu.

Do that and you won't have any problems getting the upgraded performance of the new i7-6700K cpu, as that is why your computer is freezing. Also improve the desktops case fan ventilation, fit a better intake front case fan and a better suction rear fan so that you have much better crossflow ventilation to your case, which will improve the temps considerably.
