SF314-59 sporadically losing graphics in nearly all games

No, the Swift 3 is not a gaming laptop, but I was playing some of these games on a slower desktop with an ancient graphics card. When they lose graphics, they seem locked up, but music is still playing. I can switch to other apps and they are okay. If I switch back, the screen for the game will be blank, but the music will still be playing. I have tried running windowed instead of full screen and adjusted graphics settings down in the game options and still get the issue.

A few different games have had the issue, but I will start with SteamWorld Dig 2 as an example because it isn't very demanding and by all accounts extremely stable. I had tried something more demanding just to see if it could handle it - Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order - and promptly refunded that after it locked in the first cut scene and on another attempt started gameplay but locked within a couple of minutes. Anyway, it doesn't really seem to matter what game, but I will use SteamWorld Dig 2 as my example because the bar is so low (Intel HD 4600 or better). Mine has the Intel Iris Xe which is roughly 5 times faster than the minimum suggested.

I have only had it a short while. It's running Windows 11. I went to the Intel site and got the driver assistant and updated to latest, as I had read about others having some success with doing that. I still have the issue. I looked at dxdiag after reading other posts and it all looks good for a valid  DX 12 set up, with Direct3D DDI at 12 (probably not relevant to the 2 game locking up, but asked a lot in discussions).

poking around further, it appears the Intel software update utility doesn't work properly. It claimed to update it and showed a new version in teh report on the system. But device manager still showed the old one from Acer. I downloaded and installed manually instead of using the Intel updater and now Ihave the new one, but the the Intel updater popped up and wants to replace it.

Correct. The main issue is likely the limited shared VRAM size that doesn't meet that required for rendering some of the game scenes. So the scenes choke and won't display.  Not much you can do about increasing shared VRAM since it's usually not manually adjustable.

Yes, it sounds like you are looking in the right direction. It's liable to be a driver issue with the 11th gen chips, it might be running out of VRAM as Jack suggests or it might be running out of GPU at the game resolutions in use. Try dropping game performance down...

Maybe the driver will help. Hard to say since something keeps reverting it back to the one from July of 2020. I have installed the latest, check device manager and it is a recent one from just a few days ago and the at some point it reverts back. Going to try updating again and see if I can figure out what is doing it.

I am only trying games that have minimums well below the Swift's specs. Review indicated it works with more recent/demanding games with settings lowered. It's hanging on SteamWorld Dig 2. It runs on pretty ancient hardware.

OK, I think it is the ACC (Acer) service replacing the new driver with the old one. I stopped it and now I seem to be keeping the May 2022 driver. But still locking video.

Check TaskManager Performance tab GPU shared vRAM on your particular system. Most non-game fixed RAM models without discrete GPUs & dedicated vRAM use only a small percentage of fixed RAM as shared vRAM . Often less than 512MB. Many low demand games need at least 512MB to play at low resolutions and acceptable refresh rates.

It is set at 3.9G, so that isn't it. I read lots of reviews on the laptop, but it is possible they were with other GPUs. I feel sick about it after doing more research. Look at the results of this search:

    https://www.google.com/search?q=iris+xe+graphics+freeze

Autocad has a KB on the problems, Avigilon has a support page on the issues with their video editing software and Zoom has a support page listed on the second page. These are general KB pages, not just individual incidents. Lots of other smaller companies and user complaints. This is a nightmare; I didn't plan on heavy duty high frame gaming or video editing, but it won't even handle less demanding tasks without the occasional freeze. I really hope it is something Intel can resolve in software.

Sorry. This looks like total RAM to me. Not shared VideoRAM for the GPU. Please post a screenshot of Task Manager Performance tab clicking on the GPU section. Shared GPU memory used is expressed as a fraction. For example 0.2/3.9 GB. This means that 200MB or 0.2GB is being used for VRAM out of a total 3.9 GB RAM.

Intel just pushed a GPU update to my Spin 5 yesterday... Which driver are you running? I'm running 31.0.101.2111.

Just captured immediately after freeze (can switch to other programs). I can see when it froze (spike in 3D). It's ow using 1G of RAM.

This means only 400MB or 0.4GB shared RAM for GPU Video presentation. Even low demand games and video editing tools  require at least 512MB or 0.5GB VRAM as a bare minimum even at low resolutions & FPS rates. Sorry, this model is not considered a gaming, video editing or design drawing laptop simply  because it does not have a discrete or separate GPU with its own unshared VRAM .
