Greetings all,

My Acer 1114-31 laptop cut out the other day, power button hasn't been working or a while, so I tried the old jumpstart method by using a screwdriver to shortcircuit positive and negative pins connected to the power button on the motherboard, except this time it didn't work. Has anyone else had this problem? What other methods do you recommend? Is it so damaged that I should probably just take it to a decent repair place? Thank you for any suggestions.

Thanks

Very likely yes. If the battery hasn't  shorted a cell, the cpu has probably fried from overheating once too much. Typical for a budget laptop with only CPU passive cooling. No fan. So yes, a good idea take it to a decent repair shop with reasonable rates for an evaluation & estimate. But still probably cheaper just to drop in a new mainboard for less than $100usd if you really still want a rather limited budget laptop.

Thanks, the laptop is cheap and i'm not so fussed about keeping that, I mainly just want the information that's on the hardrive. I could take it to a pro data recovery company but I think there's a more cost-efficient way of retrieving the data, it's just a case of getting it switched back on. The light still comes on when plugged into a charger, it charges almost immediately, so i'm not convinced it's a total no-hoper.

OK. Perhaps better to take it to a mobile phone repair shop since they often use the same type of emmc storage chip. Preferrably a shop that works on phones with different operating systems.
