I have a Aspire 8930 laptop that is failing to boot up.

I have removed the battery and attempted to start the laptop with no luck

The AC Adaptor is fine.

I also attempted to replace the hard drive and boot it up with the new hard drive, no go i didnt get any of the LED lights.

My thoughts are that the motherboard is shot and I need to replace the motherboard - wanted to see if anyone had anyother ideas.

Failing to power up and failing to boot up are seperate issues.

Put the battery back into the notebook.  Plug in the Adapter and wiggle it around a little.  Did you get an LED on the front of your notebook come on at any point ? Did you notice anything visually or audibly when you pressed the power on button ? Any lights, fan movement or any other noises ? You could even upload a mobile phone video of your findings to youtube and post a link of it on here, sometimes this is easier than explaining.

Do you have another Acer notebook that you have tested your adapter/power cord with ? A light on the adapter does not mean it is supplying power to the notebook, just that it is recieving power from the plug socket.

it is failing to power up

I have attempted with the battery

    Without the battery

And with a different drive (one that i know is functional) and still no luck.

Again there has been no LED lights on the front of the laptop -- the only light showing is on the AC adaptor so I know that is live.  So I know its a power supply / motherboard issue.  I'm not familar enough with the Aspire model - if the power is not comming up on the laptop & the AC adaptor is fine - is this a motherboard issue?

    thanks

There are 3 things I have seen on the Aspire 8930G in my previous employment :

No power because the DC-in cable has failed, the mainboard has failed, or because the seperate graphics card inside has failed.

In that order of frequency.  That DC-in cable is most commonly the reason as the cabling soldered onto the socket comes loose.  If you wanted to buy one then at least they are cheap and easy to find : http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=50.AP50N.007&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-gb:IE-SearchBox&ie=&oe=&gws_rd=cr&ei=1WkHUsKVMcbJOfmwgPAM

Alternatively, if you are good at soldering (or have a friend who is) get them to rework your current one : You will be able to see if the cable is loose/damaged easily also.

    Good luck ! Smiley Happy
