I added a Samsung ssd to my concept 3 pro  CN315-71. I cloned the ssd and now want to boot from it. I enabled boot menu in the bios but there is nothing in the boot menu, no drives. What am I doing wrong?

Samsung 970 Evo pcie nvme . I used the samsung magician. The clone worked fine, I took out the wd drive and the 970 works fine. I just can't seem to get the boot menu to show the drives. I do see then in the bios.

After you cloned the new Samsung PCI 4 NVMe M.2 SSD drive (did you use the proprietary Samsung Data Migration software?) and after, did you take the old M.2 boot SSD drive out? As keeping both and the old boot drive in the laptop the laptop always boots from the old drive and the new drive is not recognized as they both have a boot format feature. Hope you haven't assembled the laptop? As you need to take the old drive out and boot your laptop only with the new cloned drive.

I know that its a big job to change the M.2 drive but, you should always pre test the laptop disassembled if it boots correctly from the new cloned Samsung PCI 4 NVMe M.2 SSD drive only and then once its booted plug the SSD old drive in and format that drive (if you want it as a slave?) and then assemble the laptop when all is working and the installation is finished! Also this new Samsung drive should always be connected to the CN315-71 SSD interface of the PCIe NVMe Gen 4.0 (x16) and not into the PCIe NVMe Gen 3.0 (x4) as your laptop has both and putting this drive into the PCIe NVMe Gen 3.0 (x4) will reduce its performance. After you have done all this, you can plug the old M.2 SSD Try that as a you have connected this new drive wrongly. Good luck and hope this help=s you out. See this Acer ConceptD 7 (CN715-71) - disassembly and upgrade options as its the same as your CN315-71.

This usually doesn't work any more like in the olden days. Try temporarily disconnecting the original drive. Then try to boot from the new drive alone. The BIOS should automatically switch the Windows Boot Manager to read the EFI boot partition on the new drive as the C : \ drive. Then you can reconnect the old drive and it should show up as the D : \ drive.

I did enable boot menu in the bios but that didn't do anything. I switched ssd with the WD on the mother board and that worked. But

I'd still like to get the boot menu working as I wanted to put win 10 on one drive and 11 on the other and choose the one I wanted to boot from through the boot menu.

Yes, I understand. That's why I said this usually does NOT work at least for the same OS. But you might be able to install Win11 separately on one drive and leave Win10 on the other.  You'll just have to try it and see. Sometimes two Windows Boot Manager's will show up in the BOOT menu.  If the boot drive can't be changed in the BIOS boot menu, it can  sometimes be changed by using msconfig boot tab to choose whether Win10 or Win11 boots on the next boot cycle.

Thanks for the info. Let's say I want to instll win 11 from a USB drive and I can't choose to boot from USB. These are things that Acer should should include in the manual. I went looking for a manual for the motherboard on Intel's site but couldn't find one. There is a DFI board that uses the same chipset, maybe I'll see if I can find their manual.
  • You can use a usb nvme adapter, to format the old nvme drive:
M2 NVMe SSD USB 31 durumda 10Gbps M2 NVMe SSD muhafaza HDD kutusu ift protokol M2 NVMe PCIE NGFF SATA adaptr iin M2 SSD
Then just unplug the lithium battery, reconnect the old nvme drive to the motherboard and install windows in dual boot with windows 10.

You boot from the USB drive using the F12 startup boot option that is enabled in the BIOS Main tab. Like suggested earlier, the UEFI BIOS Windows Boot Manager isn't like the olden days with a USB in the boot priority. To boot from a bootable USB stick, you first insert the bootable stick. Then you turn the machine on and immediately start tapping the F12 key. A menu should appear to allow you to boot from the USB stick or one of the Windows boot managers if you have more than one bootable Windows internal drives.

That's the first thing I tried as it worked on every other computer I've had...but......it didn't work for me with the ssd but I will try it with a bootable USB drive when the time comes.

    Thanls!

It must be a bootable usb or only the boot manager will appear in the F12 menu.

The boot menu does work, I just haven't seen a boot menu like this before. All the other computers I've worked with show the names of the drives. With this one you have (1 boot menu) ( 2-boot menu.) 1 boots C drive and 2 boots D drive.

Essentially yes. Congratulations.   :) You should now also be able to insert & choose to boot the bootable Win11 installation stick from the F12 boot menu. Then you should be able to install Win11 on whichever internal drive you want. Leave the other Win10.
