The notebooks are not shipped with recovery discs and so the onus is on the user to burn off a set using the Acer Recovery Management software.

My advice is : If you elect to send it to Acer for repair be sure to put the originally failed HDD back in the machine first.

    Hi Syzmas,

Did your notebook not get sold with a standard 1 year warranty ? Where did the new HDD come from ? Did you not use the Acer Recovery Management software to burn a recovery set in case of an emergency like this ?

Windows 8 uses a new form of product key, it is not the sort you can just key in as before.

Probably best to telephone Acer to get some support.

As stated .. the hard drive was dead.. I cannot afford to ship a notebook back to Texas and wait weeks before I get it back.. we bought a new drive (old one was dead. tested on external drive unit also).. we replace.. new one was found but.. we are stuck here..

Ok.  In that case you are in need of a disc set for your operating system of choice.

Does Acer USA not ship the unit back at their own expense in the case of hardware failure still under warranty ? I know they do this in the UK.

I already have a disc set (windows 8) but cannot find the product key on the notebook so it asks but I cannot finds it and read that it is embedded in the Bios.. I cannot find it though

I take it that is not an Acer backup disc set you made yourself previously ?

Windows 8 keys are stored not only in the BIOS but also the operating system, they are cross checked to ensure no piracy is occurring.

You need special software to gain access to the embedded Windows 8 code.

Where did the disc set come from ?

yes, I am a MS support guy so have the Digital River Windows 8 OEM and retail disks.. but need to key to install.. though I cannot find the key .. like I stated anywhere..

This is absolutely stupid.. you get a PC loaded with windows 8.. hard drive goes.. it takes many frustrated hours/days to even figure out what you need to do..

You wonder why people pirate.. since people who buy a legit PC cannot even reinstall on a notebook that it came with !

Digital River Windows 8 OEM and retail disks.. but need to key to install

How odd.  You would have expected there to be a key there.

I have a cupboard with over 30 Win8 Pro box's and each one has a card with the key inside.

I think you need to be looking towards Digital River and asking them where your key is !

    lol, noo. noo..

that is just the OS nothing more.. you must already have your keys in order to install..

Retail disc sets come with a card that has your activation key on it.  I have ample of them in my cupboard.

OEM sets do not come with a key as they are pre-installed onto your computer and you are supposed to burn off a backup set when you first get an opportunity to incase of emergencies like this.

I am confused by your previous posts then.

I guess I should not have used the word "retail" we have EMOLP licenses for our corporation. But I WILL NOT USE one of our corporate keys for a notebook that we OWN a license for but cannot get the key WE OWN off of to reinstall..

I see.  Yep you are stuck indeed.  I suppose you need a piece of software on a bootable UEFI USB stick running WinPE4 that can dig out the Win8 key embedded in the BIOS so you can use it to key into the install discs when it prompts for it !

I dont think this software is easily found, I daresay some extensive searching could dig it up but I am not going to go down that route as it probably goes against the EULA of the forums.

So really my choice is sending back the laptop and not to be mean.. wait until I get it back to use it..

seriously .. why does the END USER need to make a backup of the system as soon as they get it in order to restore a pc.. .. this is absolutely stupid.
