4810Tz boots only w/o battery

Hi there,

I have an Acer 4810tz, running fine up till now. Yesterday the batteries got uncharged due to a long use. However, after connecting the laptop to power supply nothing happened. Pressing the on button results in 6 orange blinks on the charging led, but the system does not start the boot process and stays silent.

Reinstalling the battery does not help. Man Sad

The laptop starts without battery properly.

Is it a battery problem - eg. something went wrong with the battery electronics -, or something else?

Any hint is appreciated.

The most likely explanation is that your battery has failed. It is also possible that your power cord needs to be replaced. If you're lucky, it's a software problem that is easy to correct:

Turn off your laptop, unplug it, and remove the battery. Hold the Power button down for 45 seconds. Plug it in WITHOUT THE BATTERY and start it up. While it is still booting, re-install the battery. If that works, it was a BIOS problem.

    thanx.

I ordered a replacement and that arrived. Now I have a bit different symptom.

The new battery is not charged, but recognized.

    -  battery is installed and power turned on: I see the battery being discharged. If I connect the main, I have the signal that the system switches to charging - orange light on, on Windows I see the battery icon changing, powersawing mode is off -, but in one second the system falls back to battery only, and continues to discharge only.

If I remove the battery - even when the main is plugged in - , the system goes away in the lack of power supply.

    - battery not installed: system works as expected, until I place the battery in. after that see the symptoms above.

I tried to reset the system - all power supply off and pressing the turn on button for 45 seconds -, but no change of behaviour.

( It may happen that the older battery - that I can not try out not having a spare 4810tz around - is also ok., only discharged totally. I can not prove it, but I guess it is more likely system bug than battery error. )

    Any idea is appreciated.

I use a program called battstat to help me sometimes, maybe could be useful for you : http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html

Where did you buy your new battery from ? I prefer to buy originals from the manufacturer, I know they cost more but you get something that is not deemed "compatible" but rather "original".

It really does help if you have a known good working battery then you can truly identify if you have a mainboard problem or a battery problem.  I have more faith that a battery purchased from the manufacturer will be a good working one.  Ebay has failed me several times with "compatible" batteries.

thanx for the hint, I'll give a try to that app.

IMHO it is a BIOS / mb problem. If the hw fails to charge the batteries, instead it switches to them and ignores the charger, then when a battery is discharged and installed the box will fail to start.

So, it might be the case with the first battery. With the second the charge is ok. ( currently 53% ), but the system is draining it instead of recharging. When empty, it will give me the same error as the first one.

    I attempt a BIOS reset and/or upgrade.
